Project Manager / Senior Project Manager – Infrastructure, Engineering & Capital Projects

Location: Exeter, Devon

Salary: £45,000–£75,000 DOE

Are you an experienced Project Manager or Senior Project Manager with a background in delivering complex infrastructure, engineering or construction projects?

We're working with an established organisation in the South West that is investing significantly in its infrastructure and assets. As part of a substantial, long-term capital investment programme, they're looking to appoint a number of Project Managers and Senior Project Managers to deliver a varied portfolio of projects across the region.

This is an opportunity to take ownership of capital projects from initial planning and development through to construction, commissioning and handover, with responsibility for project performance, budgets, programmes, risk management and stakeholder engagement.

The opportunity

You'll be responsible for delivering projects involving complex engineering assets and infrastructure networks, working closely with engineering teams, contractors, consultants and internal stakeholders to ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently and in line with agreed budgets and timescales.

Depending on your experience, you'll manage individual projects or take a broader lead across multiple projects or workstreams, providing direction to multidisciplinary teams and overseeing commercial performance, governance and delivery outcomes.

You'll have genuine ownership of your projects, balancing technical, commercial and operational considerations within a complex, regulated environment.

Key responsibilities

  • Managing capital projects from initial scope definition and planning through design, procurement, construction, commissioning and final handover.
  • Taking ownership of project budgets, cost forecasts, programmes, milestones and overall delivery performance.
  • Managing contractors, consultants, framework partners and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Applying contract management principles, ideally with practical experience of NEC3 or NEC4 contracts.
  • Identifying and managing project risks, opportunities, changes, dependencies and delivery challenges.
  • Maintaining effective project governance, reporting, financial forecasts and risk registers.
  • Ensuring compliance with health, safety, environmental and quality requirements, including relevant CDM 2015 responsibilities.
  • Coordinating delivery within live operational environments and managing interfaces across projects and assets.
  • Building effective relationships with engineering, operational, commercial and senior stakeholders.
  • Supporting successful commissioning, operational readiness and handover.
  • For more senior appointments, providing leadership across multiple projects or workstreams and contributing to wider programme performance and continuous improvement.

About you

We're keen to hear from Project Managers and Senior Project Managers who can demonstrate:

  • Proven experience personally managing capital, infrastructure, engineering or construction projects throughout the full project lifecycle.
  • Strong project controls experience, including budgets, cost forecasting, programme management, risk and change.
  • Experience managing contractors, consultants and external delivery partners, with an understanding of commercial and contractual responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of NEC3/NEC4 contracts, ideally gained through hands-on project delivery.
  • An understanding of construction delivery, commissioning, operational handover and health and safety requirements.
  • The ability to manage competing priorities and engage effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving and organisational skills.
  • A relevant project management, engineering or construction qualification, or equivalent practical experience. APM PMQ, PRINCE2 or a similar qualification would be advantageous.

For Senior Project Manager positions, you'll also bring experience leading multidisciplinary teams, managing complex commercial and delivery challenges, and potentially overseeing multiple projects or workstreams simultaneously.

Experience in utilities or other regulated infrastructure environments would be particularly valuable. However, candidates from other technically complex or safety-critical sectors, including energy, nuclear, transport and defence, will also be considered where they can demonstrate transferable capital project delivery experience.

We're looking for people who can demonstrate genuine project ownership, combining technical understanding, commercial awareness and strong delivery skills.

What's on offer?

  • Competitive salary of £45,000–£75,000, depending on experience and level.
  • A comprehensive benefits package.
  • Hybrid working arrangements.
  • Opportunities to develop your career within a significant, long-term capital investment programme.
  • The chance to contribute to essential infrastructure improvements across the South West.
