Rail Engineer

Locations: UK or Republic of Ireland

Join Us in Shaping the Future of Rail Infrastructure

Join Tetra Tech and contribute to the delivery of innovative, safe and sustainable rail infrastructure across the UK and Republic of Ireland. We are looking for a Rail Engineer who can bring practical engineering expertise to multidisciplinary projects, from early-stage concept development and option selection through detailed design, construction support and handover.

This is an opportunity to work on exciting projects for clients including Network Rail and local authorities, while collaborating with experienced professionals across track, civils, structures, stations, systems, electrification, signalling, utilities and operations.

Purpose & Scope of the Role

As a Rail Engineer, you will provide practical engineering input across the full project lifecycle. You will help develop coordinated, buildable and compliant solutions that respond to client requirements, operational railway constraints, asset limitations, access arrangements and whole-life considerations.

The role will involve developing and reviewing engineering deliverables, including calculations, specifications, drawings and technical reports, within your discipline and level of competence. You will contribute to surveys, site inspections, option assessments, constructability reviews, design risk management, design assurance, construction observations and the preparation of handover information.

You will also work closely with project managers and technical specialists to define scope, estimate effort, monitor progress and communicate technical risks, decisions and requirements effectively.

Your Impact in This Position
In this role, you will help shape the safe and effective
delivery of rail infrastructure projects that support communities, passengers
and wider economic growth. Your engineering expertise will enable you to
translate technical and operational requirements into practical, coordinated
and deliverable solutions; identify and manage interfaces across multiple
engineering disciplines and railway operations; support safe design, design
assurance and compliance with relevant UK or Irish standards; improve constructability,
quality and whole-life performance; provide clear technical information to
support informed decisions by clients, project managers and delivery teams; and
contribute to the successful transition of projects from design through
construction and into operation.

Core Capabilities

Rail Engineering and Technical Delivery
Develop and review engineering deliverables, calculations, specifications, drawings and technical reports within your area of competence. Apply sound engineering judgement across rail infrastructure projects from concept through to handover.

Multidisciplinary Interface Coordination
Coordinate effectively with specialists across track, civils, structures, stations, systems, electrification, signalling, utilities and operations. Understand how discipline interfaces affect safety, constructability and project delivery.

Operational Railway Awareness
Demonstrate an understanding of the constraints associated with working on or around an operational railway, including asset limitations, access arrangements, operational requirements and client assurance processes.

Safety, Quality and Design Assurance
Contribute to safe design, design risk management, quality records, technical assurance, change control and the resolution of technical queries. Work collaboratively with relevant UK or Irish design and safety duty holders.

Communication and Project Contribution
Communicate technical information, risks and decisions clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Work with project managers to define scope, estimate effort, monitor progress and support successful project delivery.

Qualifications & Experience

Expected:

  • A degree, or equivalent experience, in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Experience in rail engineering, gained through design, construction, asset management or assurance.
  • A demonstrable understanding of engineering interfaces within an operational railway environment.
  • Experience producing and reviewing clear technical information.
  • The ability to communicate effectively and collaborate with other disciplines.
  • A commitment to safe design, quality, continuous learning and professional development.

Beneficial:

  • Experience working with UK or Irish railway standards.
  • Experience in design assurance and/or multidisciplinary information management.
  • Familiarity with Building Information Modelling (BIM) processes and systems.
  • Professional registration, or active progress towards professional registration, with an appropriate engineering institution.
  • Experience supporting surveys, site inspections, constructability reviews, construction observations or project handover.
  • Experience working with Network Rail, local authorities or other railway infrastructure clients.

Working Environment

This role can be based in the UK or Republic of Ireland, with the location remaining flexible depending on the successful candidate and project requirements.

You will be expected to travel to project sites and client locations across the UK and Ireland when required. The role may involve a combination of office-based, site-based and home-based working, depending on the requirements of the vacancy, project stage and client arrangements.

The specific office base, working pattern, expected office attendance and hybrid, remote or flexible-working options will be confirmed for the individual vacancy. You will be expected to work in accordance with the relevant local duties, standards, safety requirements and client assurance arrangements.
