Remote | Backend Java Developer — $60–$110/hour

We are sharing a full-time contractor opportunity for experienced Backend Java Developers with strong expertise in Java, Spring Boot, microservices architecture, REST APIs, and scalable backend systems to contribute to an advanced AI training and software engineering project.

Selected professionals will design, develop, review, and optimise production-style backend systems while applying real-world engineering judgement to technical tasks used in advanced AI training workflows. The work requires strong Java expertise, clean software design, effective debugging, and the ability to collaborate clearly in a distributed engineering environment. No prior experience in AI is required.

Key Responsibilities

Backend Development & Java Engineering

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend systems using Java
• Build clean, maintainable, and efficient production-quality code
• Apply strong object-oriented and backend engineering principles
• Translate technical requirements into robust implementations
• Maintain high standards for readability, reliability, and long-term maintainability

Spring Boot & Microservices

• Develop backend services using Spring Boot
• Design and maintain microservices architectures for complex application requirements
• Define clear service boundaries and integration patterns
• Support reliable communication across distributed backend components
• Apply appropriate architectural patterns for scalability and maintainability

REST APIs & System Integration

• Design and implement REST APIs for backend applications
• Support reliable integration between services and external systems
• Apply sound API design, validation, and error-handling practices
• Work with backend data structures and service-layer logic
• Ensure interfaces remain clear, consistent, and maintainable

Debugging, Performance & Reliability

• Troubleshoot and resolve backend defects and production-style issues
• Diagnose performance bottlenecks and inefficient system behaviour
• Optimise services for reliability, responsiveness, and scalability
• Contribute technical insight on application performance and security
• Support high-availability and distributed-system requirements where relevant

Code Review & Technical Collaboration

• Participate in code reviews and provide constructive engineering feedback
• Review technical specifications and contribute to implementation decisions
• Collaborate effectively with distributed technical teams
• Document technical processes, architecture, and solutions clearly
• Communicate engineering trade-offs and recommendations with precision

Ideal Profile

• Expert proficiency in Java
• Strong hands-on experience with Spring Boot
• Deep understanding of microservices architecture and design principles
• Demonstrated ability to write clean, efficient, and maintainable backend code
• Strong understanding of REST APIs, data structures, and backend engineering best practices
• Experience troubleshooting and optimising complex backend systems
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• High attention to technical detail and software quality
• Experience collaborating with remote teams in fast-paced environments
• Exposure to AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, or comparable cloud platforms is advantageous
• Experience with high-availability or distributed systems is beneficial
• Prior work on AI-driven or data-intensive systems is a plus
• No prior AI-training experience is required

Engagement Details

• Full-time independent contractor engagement
• Fully remote
• Compensation: $60–$110/hour
• Work will involve Java backend development, Spring Boot, microservices, REST APIs, debugging, optimisation, and technical review
• Strong production backend-engineering experience is central to this engagement
• Cloud, distributed-systems, or high-availability experience is particularly relevant
• Project scope, technical requirements, and system architecture may evolve depending on project needs
