Remote | Physics Expert PhD (AMO / Optical Properties of Materials) — $100–$200/hour
24-MAGWe are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for advanced physics researchers with expertise in atomic, molecular, and optical physics, optical properties of materials, atomic-structure calculations, and computational quantum methods to contribute to an advanced AI training and scientific evaluation project.
Selected professionals will apply specialist knowledge in AMO physics to technically demanding problems involving atomic polarizability, configuration-interaction methods, ytterbium isotope calculations, and optical-transition analysis. The engagement combines advanced scientific reasoning with structured technical evaluation and communication. No prior experience in AI is required.
Key Responsibilities
Atomic, Molecular & Optical Physics
- Provide expert analysis across atomic, molecular, and optical physics
- Evaluate technical problems involving the optical properties of materials and atomic systems
- Apply advanced quantum-mechanical reasoning to specialised research questions
- Explain relevant physical principles, assumptions, and computational approaches clearly
- Assess the scientific validity of proposed interpretations and technical conclusions
Ab Initio & Polarizability Calculations
- Review and analyse ab initio approaches to atomic-property calculations
- Evaluate configuration-interaction methods used to calculate atomic polarizability
- Assess assumptions, approximations, and methodological choices within computational treatments
- Identify weaknesses or inconsistencies in proposed calculations and interpretations
- Provide technically rigorous critiques and explanations grounded in established theory
Ytterbium Atomic-Structure Analysis
- Review atomic-structure calculations involving Yb-171 and Yb-174
- Analyse isotope-specific considerations relevant to ytterbium systems
- Evaluate computational approaches, physical assumptions, and calculated properties
- Identify potential issues in atomic-structure methodologies or resulting interpretations
- Provide clear technical guidance on specialised ytterbium calculations
Optical Transitions & Scientific Evaluation
- Identify and differentiate sigma and pi transitions in relevant atomic contexts
- Explain the underlying selection rules and physical principles governing transition behaviour
- Review technical responses for scientific accuracy, completeness, and clarity
- Participate in adaptive spoken evaluations requiring concise but technically substantive explanations
- Draw on legally shareable research or project examples when illustrating scientific concepts
Ideal Profile
- Advanced degree, including MS, PhD, or equivalent research experience, in Physics
- Strong specialisation in AMO physics, atomic physics, or optical properties of materials
- Proven experience with ab initio quantum calculations
- Familiarity with configuration-interaction approaches to atomic polarizability
- Deep understanding of atomic-structure computation techniques
- Experience with ytterbium isotopes, particularly Yb-171 and Yb-174, is strongly valued
- Strong understanding of sigma and pi transitions and the physical principles underlying optical spectra
- Ability to analyse complex theoretical or computational physics problems independently
- Strong structured written and verbal scientific communication skills
- Comfortable explaining technical concepts and research methodology clearly in spoken discussions
- No prior experience in AI training or model evaluation is required
