We are sharing a specialised consulting opportunity for experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineers with deep expertise in complex multi-part assemblies, parametric CAD, mechanism design, kinematic analysis, GD&T, tolerance judgement, and design review to contribute to advanced AI training and mechanical-engineering evaluation initiatives.
Selected professionals will analyse complex CAD assemblies, formulate challenging engineering questions, validate exact answers from models, review AI-generated mechanical reasoning, and document edge cases with strong technical precision. No prior AI experience is required; advanced mechanical-design expertise is the primary qualification.
Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Assembly Analysis
- Analyse complex multi-part mechanical assemblies
- Identify critical design decisions and engineering constraints
- Evaluate component relationships, interfaces, and assembly intent
- Identify potential failure points requiring expert judgement
- Apply practical mechanical-design reasoning beyond drawing interpretation
Technical Question Development
- Formulate challenging mechanical-design questions from CAD models
- Focus on non-obvious problems requiring senior-level engineering judgement
- Develop questions involving assemblies, mechanisms, tolerances, and constraints
- Avoid trivial or purely visual questions
- Ensure questions are technically meaningful and answerable
CAD Validation & Exact Answer Development
- Validate answers directly against underlying CAD models
- Document exact and defensible engineering conclusions
- Maintain clear traceability between questions and model evidence
- Identify relevant dimensions, constraints, and geometric relationships
- Ensure answers remain precise and technically reproducible
AI Output Review & Mechanical Reasoning
- Review AI-generated responses to mechanical-engineering questions
- Identify breakdowns in design intent or assembly reasoning
- Evaluate mechanism and kinematic interpretation
- Flag incorrect GD&T or tolerance assumptions
- Recommend targeted improvements to technical reasoning quality
Quality Review & Technical Documentation
- Identify ambiguous, trivial, or unanswerable questions
- Refine technical prompts for clarity and precision
- Document edge cases and legitimate sources of disagreement
- Communicate findings through clear professional documentation
- Support consistent quality standards across evaluation workflows
Ideal Profile
- 5+ years of professional mechanical-design experience
- Experience creating and overseeing multi-part assemblies from concept
- Strong ability to make original mechanical-design decisions rather than working only from existing drawings
- Mastery of at least one major parametric CAD platform
- Relevant tools may include SolidWorks, Creo, NX, CATIA, Inventor, Fusion, Onshape, or Solid Edge
- Deep expertise in design intent and assembly reasoning
- Strong mechanism and kinematic analysis capabilities
- Advanced understanding of GD&T and tolerance judgement
- Experience identifying design constraints and failure modes
- Strong technical reasoning across complex mechanical systems
- Experience teaching, mentoring, leading design reviews, or coaching engineering teams
- Exceptional written English communication skills
- Strong ability to document technical reasoning precisely
- Experience in industrial machinery, automation, robotics, automotive, heavy equipment, aerospace, defence, medical devices, consumer products, tooling, or fixture design
- FreeCAD experience is advantageous
- Advanced tolerance analysis or formal design-review leadership is advantageous
- No prior AI-training or model-evaluation experience is required
Engagement Details
- Independent contractor engagement
- Fully remote
- Expected commitment: approximately 15 hours per week
- Compensation: $40–$90/hour
- Work will involve CAD assembly analysis, mechanical-reasoning question development, answer validation, AI-output review, and technical documentation
- Strong parametric CAD expertise is central to this engagement
- Assignments may involve design intent, mechanism analysis, kinematics, GD&T, tolerance assessment, and failure-point identification
- Contributors will be expected to distinguish technically meaningful questions from ambiguous or trivial ones
- Documentation must support clear traceability and reproducibility
- Project scope, CAD models, and engineering scenarios may vary depending on project requirements
- Work must be completed without using confidential, proprietary, export-controlled, classified, client-restricted, or otherwise protected designs, CAD files, drawings, technical data, or documentation belonging to any employer, client, institution, or other third party
