Responsibilities
What You'll Do:
Responsible for processing claims against responsible motor carriers to recover loss or damage to Crowley owned/leased cargo equipment. This position works independently to obtain recoveries from motor carriers, and other third parties, who utilize Crowley cargo equipment (e.g. containers, trailers, chassis, gensets) pursuant to the UIIA equipment interchange agreement. Job duties include:
Key Responsibilities:
- Claims Intake: monitors intake portal to receive first reports of equipment damage and cargo claims from motor carriers and Crowley Equipment Maintenance. Timely inputs claim into database, assigns claim to a company cargo claim adjuster on a rotating basis, acknowledges receipt of claim with customer. Responds to initial inquiries from customers.
- Investigation: obtains estimated cost of repair and/or actual repair costs from internal areas or outside vendors. Routinely directs motor carrier to transport damaged equipment to approved vendor for repair.
- Documentation: assists cargo claim adjuster by obtaining and organizing relevant claim and insurance documentation for each new claim. Inputs documentation to database.
- Legal Liability/Damages Analysis: analyzes company’s legal liability for cargo loss or damage pursuant to bill of lading, waybill and/or other contractual terms. Reserves claims within limited financial authority on most probable loss basis. Issues timely payment of claims.
- Billing: Prepares and submits miscellaneous billing supporting documentation to responsible motor carrier or other third party, including customers. Monitors claim for timely payment. Negotiates contested damage claims.
- Additional Recovery Duties: role will file claims against responsible third parties for damage to other Crowley real and personal property, including owned/leased trucks, terminals and terminal equipment.
- Compliance: Adheres to all company policies and procedures governing claims handling.
Qualifications
Education & Credentials:
- Associate degree and/or formal training after high school (vocational, business or technical school); or a combination of post high school and equal experience may be substituted for education..
Experience:
- 2 - 4 years of directly related experience in the intermodal freight/logistics business, preferably in claims or documentation/booking. Understanding of intermodal operations, freight and insurance documentation and commercial transactions. General claims handling experience may be substituted for the logistics industry experience.
Technical Skills:
- Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office products including Word, Outlook, Excel and SharePoint in addition demonstrated knowledge of programs such as Riskconnect, C-Sight, RMIS, Magaya Live Tracker, WAM, ReeferConnect, and various customer logistics programs.
Other:
- Bilingual (English/Spansih)
Working Conditions:
Works both inside an office environment and also outside in conditions of both high and low temperatures. May be exposed to odors, dust, dirt, mechanical hazards, high noise levels and potentially dangerous equipment. Must be able to crouch and stoop to get into areas with restricted headroom and be able to climb ladders. May require extended use of computer keyboard and viewing of computer monitor and ability to sit for long periods of time.
