Research Statistician II
College Board – Learning & Assessment
Location: This is a remote role. Candidates who live near CB offices have the option of being fully remote or hybrid (Tuesday and Wednesday in office). All CB employees are required to occasionally travel to meet in person for business purposes.
About the Team
The SAT Psychometrics, Analytics and Research (SPAR) team, as part of the larger Psychometrics group at College Board, supports more than seven million students a year as they prepare for a successful transition to college and career. SPAR partners closely with the College Readiness Assessments — primarily the SAT Suite of Assessments — to ensure operational excellence and best-in-class measurement solutions. Our work ensures that students, educators, and other stakeholders can trust the data that informs the most important decisions of their academic lives.
About the Opportunity
As a Research Statistician on the SPAR team, you will be a core contributor to the operational infrastructure that keeps the SAT Suite of Assessments running accurately and on schedule. This is a hands-on, production-oriented role that demands strong statistical programming skills, sound analytical judgment, and the ability to execute independently on time-sensitive work in a fast-moving environment.
Your primary work will span multiple critical operational pipelines. Each pipeline has defined deliverables, hard deadlines, and downstream dependencies — which means your ability to work independently, flag issues early, and move quickly through ambiguity matters as much as your technical skill. You will also contribute to process improvement initiatives and non-routine psychometric projects that strengthen the team's tools and capabilities over time.
This role is best suited for someone who takes ownership of their work— who initiates solutions rather than waiting to be guided, communicates proactively when conditions change, and holds themselves to a high standard of accuracy under time pressure.
In This Role, You Will
Operational Data and Psychometric Support (50%)
- Execute pretesting analyses for SAT Suite Administrations, including data extraction, classical item analysis and item response theory (IRT) analysis
- Execute psychometric maintenance analyses on the SAT Suite scores by a defined cycle, including data extraction, generation and QC of statistical reports
- Own compilation and quality control of assigned sections of client-facing technical analysis reports, ensuring review-ready accuracy for routine and ad hoc delivery to stakeholders
- Own compilation and quality control of assigned sections of client-facing technical analysis reports, ensuring review-ready accuracy for routine and ad hoc delivery to stakeholders
Process and Tool Development (30%)
- Independently develop, maintain, and update data management and statistical analysis code for operational processes
- Identify and implement improvements to existing operational workflows
- Contribute to the evaluation and adoption of Python-based solutions and other tools that improve team efficiency, scalability, and integration with organizational systems
- Maintain accurate and current documentation of processes, tools, and quality control findings to enhance team knowledge and operational continuity
Collaboration and Communication (20%)
- Partner with psychometricians, test development, technology, and other cross-functional teams to support accurate and timely delivery of assessment data and reports
- Represent SPAR's analytical work with accuracy and clarity in cross-functional discussions and project meetings
- Proactively manage work scope and status, identify blockers, and escalate issues in timely and appropriate manner
About You
To qualify for this role, you must have:
- Bachelor's or graduate degree in statistics, mathematics, psychometrics, or a related quantitative field
- 5–7 years of relevant experience in statistical programming, data analysis, or psychometric operations in a production or operational setting
- Proficiency in Python and R required and SAS a plus — including independent development and maintenance of complex projects in those languages
- Experience with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook) with an emphasis on MS Word and Excel
- Ability or willingness to leverage AI tools — including large language models, code generation assistants, and AI-enabled data workflows — to identify solution, improve productivity, and accelerate work delivery
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and to manage time-sensitive deliverables with urgency and accuracy
- Strong attention to detail with a consistent record of delivering accurate, error-free work in high-stakes operational contexts with downstream dependencies
- Ability to identify and flag issues early in a workflow
- Experience with psychometrics, educational measurement, or the standardized testing industry required; familiarity with item analysis, calibration, and scaling is a plus
- Experience with other advanced statistical or psychometric software preferred
- Excellent organizational and time management skills; demonstrated ability to manage multiple competing priorities simultaneously and adjust sequencing when needed
- Ability to travel 2–4 times per year to College Board offices or on behalf of College Board business
All roles at College Board require:
- A passion for expanding educational and career opportunities and mission-driven work
- Curiosity and enthusiasm for emerging technologies, with a willingness to experiment with and adopt new AI-driven solutions and comfort with learning and applying new digital tools independently and proactively.
- Clear and concise communication skills, written and verbal
- A learner's mindset and a commitment to growth: welcoming diverse perspectives, giving and receiving timely, respectful feedback, and continuously improving through iterative learning and user input.
- A drive for impact and excellence: solving complex problems, making data-informed decisions, prioritizing what matters most, and continuously improving through learning, user input, and external benchmarking.
- A collaborative and empathetic approach: working across differences, fostering trust, and contributing to a culture of shared success
- Authorization to work in the United States
About Our Process
- Application review will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. This role is expected to accept applications for a minimum of 5 business days.
- While the hiring process may vary, it generally includes: resume and application submission, recruiter phone/video screen, hiring manager interview, performance exercise such as live coding, a panel interview, a conversation with leadership and reference checks.
