Frontier Energy is seeking a technically skilled, customer-focused professional to support the launch and growth of a Strategic Energy Management (SEM) program for commercial, institutional, and industrial customers in Texas. This role combines hands-on facility investigation, HVAC and controls expertise, energy analysis, and customer coaching to identify and sustain energy-saving operational improvements.
The ideal candidate has practical experience with HVAC systems, building automation or energy management systems (BAS/EMS/BMS), industrial controls, or PLCs and can effectively work with both technical systems and the people who operate them. Direct SEM experience is not required.
This is a full-time position based in our Austin, Texas office, with up to 30% regional travel, including occasional overnight travel.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as a primary SEM technical advisor and energy coach for participating customers.
- Develop strong working relationships with each customer's designated Facility Champion and facility/operations personnel.
- Conduct detailed facility walkthroughs and operational assessments at large commercial, institutional, and industrial facilities.
- Investigate HVAC, refrigeration, central plant, controls, lighting, compressed air, process, and other significant energy-consuming systems.
- Work directly with building automation systems (BAS), energy management systems (EMS/BMS), and control systems to understand current operating sequences and identify optimization opportunities.
- Help customers translate identified opportunities into specific, actionable energy management action plans.
- Track implementation and verify that operational changes remain in place.
- Participate in customer recruitment, presentations, workshops, and cohort meetings as the SEM program expands.
Required Skills
- 4+ years of work experience with HVAC, controls, building automation, energy management systems commissioning/retro-commissioning, industrial controls, or facility energy management. Strong sales and/or customer service communication skills, both verbally and in writing, that authentically build trust and influence without authority.
- Proven ability to coordinate, guide, and review work from staff and partners to ensure quality and accountability.
- Detailed and organized self-starter with the ability to prioritize a workload and proactively identify and resolve problems.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is essential, with a strong emphasis on Teams for collaboration, Excel for data analysis, and Word for producing technical reports.
- Must be willing and able to contribute in a team environment, while also possessing the capability to perform work independently.
- Ability to coordinate travel logistics for off-site activity.
- Ability to independently travel to sites throughout the region up to 30% of the time, including occasional overnight travel.
Preferred Skills
- 3 – 5 years of Direct prior Strategic Energy Management (SEM) experience.
- Previous experience supporting staff performing proactive customer engagement activities. Knowledge of building systems, energy efficiency, and how customers make decisions regarding energy usage.
- Knowledge of energy and finance calculation concepts such as kWh, Btu, Dth, simple paybacks, and ROI.
- Strong data entry skills to enter information in tracking systems/databases and ability to analyze and interpret the data to solve practical problems.
