OVERVIEW

JOB TITLE: School of Education Graduate Writing Center Consultant

LOCATION: Remote Work (mix of evening and day times). Physical space available in Minneapolis if preferred.

Pay: $19.00 an hour

Hours: 5 hours hours per week (must have at least 2 hours available in the evening)

Dates: Position available Fall 2026 Semester

JOB SUMMARY:

The overarching goal of the School of Education Graduate Writing Center is to create better writers by providing graduate students in the School of Education with collaborative writing consultations. A Writing Center Consultant must be knowledgeable in APA citation style and be able to convey ideas about higher-order writing concerns, like essay organization and creating a thesis statement, as well as lower-order writing concerns like grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation. Along with writing knowledge, Graduate Writing Consultants must be able to work comfortably in a 1:1 setting with students at any stage in the writing process, from brainstorming to a final draft. To create a collaborative learning environment, writing consultants must ask open-ended questions and provide writing rules for students to follow in the future. Please note that of the 5 hours available, this position must have half of those hours in the evening or weekends to accomade the needs of Graduate Students in the School of Education.

Writing Center Best Practices:

  • The School of Education Graduate Writing Center facilitates learning through collaborative writing consultations, rather that editing or merely correcting, and emphasizes the writing process rather than the final product
  • The School of Education Graduate Writing Center is student centered. Consultations will focus on student-specific needs, and writing consultants will teach students within the context of the student’s own writing abilities
  • Writing Consultants begin consultations focusing on higher level writing concerns, such as a paper’s organization or thesis, and progress toward lower order writing concerns, like grammar and mechanics

Training to become a writing consultant, similar to student-centered consultations, is consultant-centered. Tutoring basics are addressed during the first week, and new material will be incorporated on a regular basis. Consultants may be asked to host workshops and create new handouts.

Key areas of responsibility:

  • Work 1:1 with peers in the School of Education on their writing projects
  • Meet students at their level and explore different tutoring methods to discover which is most effective for each student
  • Treat each client as an individual, with needs varying widely between the last and next
  • Document writing consultations
  • Host and create Writing Center Workshops on a variety of writing topics
  • Create handouts to add to the handout library
  • Put into practice the Writing Center Best Practices
  • Develop a positive Writing Center relationship with School of Education graduate students and faculty

This position will be for the Fall 2026 semester. We will know in December if this position will continue for J-term 2027 and Spring 2027 but we can't gaurentee more than one semester of employment.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Full-time graduate student standing
  • Must be available to work some evenings online and some hours during the day (preference may be given to someone with a variety of evening availability)
  • Knowledge of APA and strong writing skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Must demonstrate strong customer service abilities
