Scientific Head of Accessibility, Inclusion & AI Learning Innovation
We are seeking a senior professional to take scientific leadership and oversight of APYRON’s Accessibility, Inclusion & AI Learning Innovation model and to contribute actively to shaping our future educational strategy.
The Role
The role combines scientific leadership, the design of inclusive learning environments, accessibility, Universal Design for Learning, Assistive Technology and Artificial Intelligence.
The Scientific Head will work closely with APYRON’s management and interdisciplinary team and will be responsible for scientific quality, the development of new services, the implementation of international accessibility standards and the creation of a coherent and measurable model of inclusive learning.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide scientific leadership and oversight of APYRON’s overall Accessibility, Inclusion & AI Learning Innovation model.
- Design and scientifically oversee accessible and inclusive learning environments for neurodivergent individuals and people with diverse cognitive, sensory, physical and learning needs.
- Develop and implement APYRON’s Universal Design for Learning (UDL) strategy across services, educational programmes, learning experiences and educational materials.
- Develop scientific frameworks and processes for assessing learning, functional and accessibility needs.
- Provide scientific oversight of the selection, assessment, adaptation and implementation of Assistive Technology.
- Evaluate emerging accessibility technologies and assess their potential integration into APYRON’s services.
- Design and oversee APYRON’s AI-supported learning strategy.
- Evaluate and pedagogically integrate Generative AI, Agentic AI and emerging AI technologies.
- Develop frameworks for the safe, responsible, accessible and pedagogically sound use of Artificial Intelligence.
- Develop policies relating to data protection, human oversight and responsible AI use in educational settings.
- Define and monitor Digital Accessibility standards for APYRON’s websites, platforms, digital services, educational materials and technology products.
- Oversee accessibility audits, gap analyses and remediation plans.
- Ensure alignment with international standards and guidelines, including:
- WCAG 2.2 | EN 301 549 | ISO/IEC 40500 | ISO/IEC 30071-1 | ISO 9241-171
- Develop and continuously evolve APYRON’s internal Accessibility & Inclusion Standards.
- Provide scientific oversight of the interdisciplinary team and contribute to complex cases requiring an interdisciplinary approach.
- Provide mentoring, professional supervision and scientific guidance to team members.
- Design and oversee internal training programmes in UDL, Accessibility, Assistive Technology and AI-supported learning.
- Monitor international scientific and technological developments and translate new knowledge into APYRON’s services and practices.
- Contribute to the design of new educational services, projects, workshops and learning products.
- Develop partnerships with universities, research institutions, accessibility organisations, technology partners and international networks.
- Define KPIs relating to accessibility, learner outcomes, quality, inclusion and impact.
- Systematically evaluate the effectiveness of services and educational interventions.
- Contribute to APYRON’s strategic planning and long-term development.
Budget & Strategic Responsibility
The role also involves meaningful participation in the financial and strategic planning of relevant activities.
Responsibilities include:
- Managing and monitoring budgets for Accessibility, Assistive Technology, AI tools, Learning Innovation, Research and Professional Development.
- Developing annual budgets and allocating resources across projects and strategic priorities.
- Evaluating the cost and return on investment of technology and educational tools.
- Financial planning for the implementation of Universal Design for Learning and Accessibility initiatives.
- Evaluating total implementation costs, including licensing, procurement, training, implementation and maintenance.
- Connecting scientific and accessibility objectives with sustainability, operational planning and the measurable value of services.
- Working with management on the strategic and financial planning of new services and investments.
What We’re Looking For
We are looking for a senior professional who combines scientific expertise, strategic thinking and a deep understanding of accessibility and inclusive education.
Someone who can translate scientific knowledge and international standards into practical policies, processes, services and measurable quality standards.
Required Experience & Qualifications
- More than 15 years of proven professional experience in the design, implementation and/or scientific oversight of educational environments for neurodivergent individuals and people with disabilities.
- Strong academic background in Special Education, Inclusive Education, Educational Psychology, Accessibility, Educational Technology or a related field.
- Extensive experience in designing inclusive and personalised learning environments.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the implementation of Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
- Strong knowledge of Assistive Technology and technologies supporting people with diverse functional needs.
- Experience in the assessment and selection of assistive technologies.
- Demonstrated experience in AI-supported learning, Generative AI or other applications of Artificial Intelligence in education.
- Understanding of AI ethics, privacy, safety, human oversight and responsible AI use.
- Strong knowledge of WCAG 2.2 and experience implementing or overseeing accessibility requirements.
- Very good knowledge of EN 301 549.
- Understanding of relevant international standards, including ISO/IEC 40500, ISO/IEC 30071-1 and ISO 9241-171.
- Experience in designing and implementing accessibility policies, audits and remediation plans.
- Proven experience in budget management, financial planning and resource allocation.
- Ability to assess the financial sustainability of accessibility and UDL initiatives.
- Experience managing or scientifically supervising interdisciplinary teams.
- Strong strategic planning and new service development capabilities.
- Excellent communication, organisational and leadership skills.
- Very good command of English and confidence working with international standards, scientific literature and professional networks.
International Accessibility Certifications
Holding an active, internationally recognised accessibility certification will be considered a significant advantage, including:
- IAAP CPACC – Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies
- IAAP CPWA – Certified Professional in Web Accessibility
- IAAP WAS – Web Accessibility Specialist
- IAAP ADS – Accessible Document Specialist
Other internationally recognised certifications or demonstrable advanced accessibility practice experience will also be viewed positively.
