The San Diego Union-Tribune is seeking a resourceful, thoughtful, and diligent editor to help plan, orchestrate, edit, and oversee print sections of the daily paper, ensuring high standards of quality, accuracy, and fairness under deadline pressure. The ideal candidate will have superior news judgment, strong editing and writing skills, a commitment to collaboration, and a deep interest in journalism that engages with and reflects local communities.
Although this is a remote position, candidates must reside in San Diego, CA.
What you will do:
Exercise news judgment, applying journalistic frameworks to a keen knowledge of section topics, community issues, and history
Plan, edit, coordinate, and publish daily and weekly sections
Work cooperatively under pressure, multitask, and produce high-quality work in a deadline-driven environment
Team up with topic editors, quality editors, designers, and visual journalists to ensure all are able to do their best work, following newsroom best practices for collaboration, planning, and workflow
Make sure production processes and deadlines are met
Determine the daily content of designated sections, including the hierarchy of stories and their placement within the sections
Ensure accuracy and appropriate editing and headline creation
Champion consistent application of style and grammar rules
Stay informed on local news and national trends, and what they mean for San Diego
Meet daily and long-term deadlines
What you will bring:
Academic degree or equivalent experience in journalism
Editing experience at a reputable daily news publication or website
Demonstrated news judgment and community knowledge
Critical-thinking skills, with application in the areas of ethics, diversity, fairness, and credibility
Command of the fundamentals of journalism: fairness, accuracy, accessibility
Excellent command of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and AP style
Ability to make independent news decisions, initiate projects, and manage your own schedule
Experience working with news service copy
Collaborative spirit, inclusive approach, and comfort working with journalists throughout the newsroom
Benefits and Compensation:
The hourly range is $33.80 - $38.15 + cell phone stipend. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to geographic location, education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, the Company offers eligible employees a variety of benefits including medical, dental, life and disability insurance, 401k, as well as paid time off and select paid holidays (all benefits are based on eligibility).
