Company Description
Wolveshill Consulting Ltd. (WHC) is a UK-based industrial technology company working across semiconductor technologies, IoT, industrial digitalisation and connected systems. As part of the continued development of our semiconductor business, we are expanding our UK-based technical team and are looking for **three Semiconductor Laser Design Engineers**, across Junior and Senior levels, with expertise in III-V compound semiconductors and InP-based optoelectronic devices.
This is an opportunity to join a growing semiconductor venture at an early stage, contribute to the development of next-generation photonic technologies, and participate in our Company Share Scheme.
Role Responsibilities
- Lead the device design, simulation optimisation and process development of InP chips, including optoelectronic performance modelling, structural design and parameter validation.
- Design and develop high-speed integrated modulators and semiconductor lasers, addressing key technical challenges including high-frequency signal integrity, thermal management and chip-package co-design.
- Work closely with process engineering teams to develop wafer fabrication and tape-out plans, lead chip performance testing and failure analysis, and optimise product yield and reliability.
- Monitor and evaluate emerging technologies, including Co-Packaged Optics (CPO), coherent optical modules and related technologies, and contribute to the technical roadmap for next-generation products.
- Prepare technical documentation, patents and standardisation proposals to support product development and commercialisation.
- Lead reverse engineering and benchmark testing of competitor chips, using electrical and optical parameter analysis, materials characterisation and other analytical techniques to identify key design characteristics and support internal design iteration.
Qualifications & Experience
Education
- PhD or equivalent professional experience in Microelectronics, Optoelectronic Engineering, Semiconductor Physics, Photonics, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
Experience
- Relevant experience in the design of **III-V compound semiconductor optoelectronic devices**, including **EML, DFB, APD or related devices**.
- For Senior-level candidates, **5+ years of experience in III-V compound semiconductor optoelectronic device design** is preferred.
- Experience leading the development and successful production of **100G or higher-speed products** is highly desirable, particularly for Senior-level candidates.
Technical Skills
- Strong proficiency with high-frequency electromagnetic and photonic simulation tools such as **Lumerical and COMSOL**, and semiconductor device simulation tools such as **Silvaco**.
- Strong understanding of key performance metrics for high-speed optical chips, including **bandwidth, TDECQ and BER**, as well as their testing methodologies and optimisation approaches.
- Good understanding of optical communication systems, including **PAM4 modulation and DSP co-design**. Experience in **chip-to-module co-development** is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with optoelectronic device reverse-engineering and analysis techniques, including **SEM/TEM cross-sectional analysis, EBIC carrier imaging and spectral response analysis**, with the ability to combine analytical results with simulation tools to develop competitor device models.
Professional Capabilities
- Ability to take independent ownership of technical projects.
- Ability to rapidly identify **design-process interaction and coupling issues** and develop innovative technical solutions.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Language
- Professional proficiency in English, with the ability to efficiently review technical literature and participate in international technical discussions.
Working Arrangement
- UK-based position
- Primarily Work From Home
- Occasional international travel to foundries, manufacturing facilities and project partners in Europe and Asia
- Expected business travel: less than 20%
Salary & Benefits
- **£55,000–£100,000 per annum**, depending on experience and seniority
- Full-time position
- 3 positions available across Junior and Senior levels
