The Senior Accountant, Accounts Payable is responsible for supporting the organization’s accounts payable operations through accurate and timely invoice processing, payment activities, reconciliations, vendor support, audit preparation, and related accounting functions. This role will provide advanced accounting support within the Accounts Payable function, assist with complex transactions and issue resolution, and contribute to process improvement initiatives designed to strengthen operational efficiency, accuracy, and internal controls. The Senior Accountant, Accounts Payable will serve as an experienced accounting resource within the team, independently supporting higher-complexity accounting activities and helping strengthen the team’s capacity to support continued organizational growth. This position will work closely with Finance leadership, internal business partners, vendors, and other stakeholders to ensure Accounts Payable activities are completed accurately, efficiently, and in accordance with established accounting policies and procedures. This position will report to the Supervisor, Accounts Payable.

Location: Hybrid (Jacksonville, Florida)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform complex Accounts Payable activities, including invoice review, payment processing, account reconciliations, discrepancy research, and resolution of escalated issues.
  • Review transactions for accuracy, appropriate coding, required documentation, and compliance with organizational policies, accounting standards, and internal controls.
  • Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities, including reconciliations, accruals, journal entries, schedules, and supporting documentation.
  • Provide audit support and serve as a knowledgeable resource for Accounts Payable questions from internal stakeholders and vendors.
  • Maintain Accounts Payable policies, procedures, workflows, and controls while identifying opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, scalability, and system utilization.
  • Participate in cross-functional Finance initiatives, system implementations, enhancements, testing, and process changes that support organizational growth.
  • Support vendor relationship management by resolving payment inquiries, discrepancies, account issues, and other escalated matters while monitoring trends and risks.
  • Partner with Accounts Payable leadership, guide less experienced team members, prepare ad hoc reports and analyses, and support special projects and other assigned accounting activities.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated success and a proven track record in professional/life experience in specific job functions, projects, or industries. Military service can substitute for professional experience and/or formal education requirements.

  • Associates degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field or an equivalent of 1-3 years of accounting experience.
  • Two or more years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including Accounts Payable or related transactional accounting experience.
  • Experience performing account reconciliations, researching accounting discrepancies, and supporting month-end close activities.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills.

You’ll Stand Out If You Have:

  • Experience within a high-volume Accounts Payable environment preferred.
  • Experience supporting financial audits and preparing audit documentation preferred.
  • Experience with ERP, Accounts Payable, procurement, or financial systems preferred.
  • Experience supporting process improvement, system implementation, or workflow enhancement initiatives preferred.  Nonprofit accounting experience preferred.

Key Competencies:

  • Strong knowledge of Accounts Payable accounting practices, transaction processing, reconciliations, and payment operations.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to independently research and resolve complex accounting and payment discrepancies.
  • Sound judgment and attention to detail when reviewing transactions, prioritizing work, and ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and appropriate documentation.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines in a high-volume environment.
  • Ability to identify process inefficiencies and contribute to practical improvements that support changing business needs, increased transaction volume, and organizational growth.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills and proficiency in financial and Accounts Payable systems.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate with Finance leadership, internal stakeholders, business functions, and external vendors.
  • Ability to support audit activities, internal controls, and documentation requirements.

Working Conditions and Equipment Use:

  • Work is performed indoors in a typical office environment - not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
  • Valid driver’s license and proof of insurance may be required, depending on role responsibilities.
  • Must be able to lift up to fifteen (15) pounds.
  • Frequent use of office machines to include telephone, computer, and printer.
