Senior Application AI Engineer - SAP Globalization AI

What you'll bring

You are a senior software engineer. You have extensive experience in delivering AI-powered systems for production. You have solid skills in backend engineering. You also have hands-on expertise in LLM applications, agentic systems, and cloud-native architecture. You bring solid communication skills, a collaborative approach, and the creative thinking and learning agility to adapt as the role evolves.

• A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Advanced Python proficiency and strong experience with async backend services, APIs, distributed systems, Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, and automated testing.
• Strong practical knowledge of advanced RAG, context engineering, tool calling, and agentic workflows - including the ability to turn nondeterministic AI outputs into reliable product behavior.
• Demonstrated technical leadership and mentoring experience, with the ability to align product managers, engineers, and domain experts, and a track record of turning new AI technologies into measurable improvements.
• You approach AI in a useful and responsible way. You use AI-assisted tools, context engineering, and automation to create better solutions. You also make sure that AI-generated outputs are quality, safe, and aligned.
• Fluency in English is required for this role.

What you'll build

You will lead the design and delivery of critical AI-powered systems - owning architecture, implementation, and production operations end to end.

• Lead design and implementation of scalable AI-powered applications, agents, retrieval systems, and backend services - owning technical decisions across orchestration, APIs, security, observability, and cloud operations.
• Design advanced RAG systems and agentic workflows, integrating across distributed systems via REST APIs, MCP and A2A protocols, and event-driven or streaming patterns, with robust context management, validation, and failure handling.
• Ensure production readiness through automated testing, resilience, observability, and performance engineering - investigating and resolving complex cross-service production issues.
• Design secure identity and service-to-service integration patterns using OAuth/OIDC, authentication, authorization, and secrets management.
• Evaluate emerging AI models, frameworks, and protocols with focused experiments. Provide guidance on responsible adoption. Create reusable engineering patterns for teams across SAP Globalization.
• Own critical systems end to end, mentor engineers, lead code reviews, and collaborate with the AI scientist, product managers, and domain experts to turn validated findings into production.

You'll join SAPGLO E-Invoicing Localization, part of SAP Globalization AI - a global team across 40 locations building AI agents, intelligent tools, and the infrastructure to scale them. The focus is on applying AI to coding, research, automation, and software design to accelerate compliant solutions for markets worldwide. Learning, coaching, and knowledge sharing are part of how the team runs. This is an active build phase - a good moment to lead how AI engineering is practiced in enterprise localization at SAP.
