Senior Civil Design Engineer – BESS & Energy Infrastructure

The Opportunity

Spencer Ogden is seeking an experienced Senior Civil Design Engineer to support the design and engineering delivery of utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and wider energy infrastructure projects across EMEA.

This is a 12-month contract opportunity, offering remote working from Germany with occasional international travel. The successful candidate will take a senior technical role in the development, analysis and delivery of civil and structural design packages for BESS installations, high-voltage substations, solar projects, power plants and associated energy infrastructure.

The position is strongly focused on detailed civil and structural engineering design, including design calculations, foundation engineering, structural analysis, technical documentation and the production and checking of engineering drawings. The successful candidate will work closely with lead engineers and multidisciplinary project teams to deliver robust, buildable and code-compliant design solutions.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and deliver detailed civil and structural design packages for utility-scale BESS, HV substations and associated energy infrastructure projects.
• Undertake the design and engineering of reinforced concrete and steel structures, foundations and equipment support systems.
• Develop and check civil design drawings, layouts and construction details using AutoCAD or ZWCAD.
• Design and specify foundations for BESS containers, transformers, inverters, switchgear and other electrical equipment.
• Undertake civil design for site grading, earthworks, drainage systems, access roads, cable trenches, cable pits, fencing and associated infrastructure.
• Design specialist civil and structural elements, including piled foundations, transformer bunds, firewalls, control room buildings, switchroom foundations and equipment supports.
• Prepare, review and verify detailed civil and structural design calculations, ensuring compliance with relevant European codes, Eurocodes and project-specific engineering standards.
• Perform structural analysis and modelling using software such as Robot Structural Analysis, STAAD.Pro, ETABS, RAM Connection and Tekla, as applicable.
• Review and check design deliverables produced by other engineers, ensuring technical accuracy, consistency, quality and constructability.
• Evaluate design interfaces between civil, structural, electrical and other engineering disciplines.
• Provide technical solutions to complex design challenges, responding to engineering queries, RFIs and design changes throughout project delivery.
• Liaise with lead engineers, project stakeholders, EPC contractors and construction teams to resolve technical issues and ensure design intent is maintained.
• Support value engineering, design optimisation and the development of practical, cost-effective engineering solutions.
• Manage design deliverables and technical documentation in line with project specifications, quality requirements and agreed schedules.
• Undertake occasional travel across EMEA to support project requirements, design reviews or technical coordination meetings.

Requirements

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or a closely related discipline.
• Minimum of 5 years' relevant civil and structural design engineering experience, ideally at senior engineer level.
• Demonstrable experience delivering detailed civil design packages for utility-scale BESS, HV substations, power plants, solar projects or comparable energy infrastructure.
• Strong technical expertise in foundation design, reinforced concrete structures, steelwork, equipment supports and associated civil infrastructure.
• Experience designing foundations for heavy electrical equipment, transformers, BESS containers and other power infrastructure components.
• Good understanding of site development design, including grading, earthworks, drainage, access roads and underground cable infrastructure.
• Experience with HV substation civil and structural design is highly desirable, including equipment foundations, transformer bunds, cable trenches and control buildings.
• Strong working knowledge of applicable Eurocodes, European engineering standards and relevant project specifications.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD or ZWCAD, with experience using structural analysis and design software such as Robot, STAAD.Pro, ETABS, RAM Connection or Tekla.
• Previous experience working within an EPC contractor, engineering consultancy or multidisciplinary design team delivering energy infrastructure projects.
• Ability to independently develop, review and technically verify engineering calculations, drawings and design documentation.
• Strong problem-solving skills, with a focus on design optimisation, constructability and technical quality.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to coordinate effectively with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
• Fluent English, both written and spoken.
• Flexibility to undertake occasional international travel across EMEA.
