This is an exciting opportunity to help shape safer, more efficient transportation networks by leading the design and delivery of roundabouts and roadway improvements for state and local transportation agencies.
You will contribute to a strong portfolio of active and upcoming transportation projects, applying your technical expertise to complex intersection improvements, highway and arterial roadway design, and multimodal infrastructure solutions. From preliminary engineering through final design and construction support, you will play a key role in developing practical, innovative solutions that improve traffic operations, enhance roadway safety, and serve Wisconsin communities.
At AECOM, you will work alongside experienced roadway, traffic, bridge, drainage, and transportation planning professionals in a collaborative environment that encourages technical excellence, professional growth, and leadership. This role offers the opportunity to take ownership of challenging design assignments, build client relationships, mentor developing engineers, and make a lasting impact on the region's transportation infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development of roadway and intersection improvement plans, specifications, cost estimates, and contract documents.
- Perform and oversee the design of modern roundabouts, including geometric layouts, roadway alignments, lane configurations, roadside design, and safety enhancements.
- Design and coordinate roadway improvements involving drainage, stormwater management, pavement design, traffic staging, utility coordination, and permitting.
- Prepare engineering calculations, design reports, intersection control evaluations, pavement design reports, and supporting technical documentation.
- Apply knowledge of transportation engineering standards, design guidelines, and construction practices to develop practical, cost-effective, and constructible solutions.
- Coordinate with WisDOT, county highway departments, municipalities, and other project stakeholders to establish project requirements and advance design deliverables.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including highway, bridge, traffic, drainage, environmental, and transportation planning professionals.
- Lead project meetings, communicate technical recommendations, and prepare presentations for clients and stakeholders.
- Manage assigned project tasks and deliverables to meet established budgets, schedules, quality standards, and client expectations.
- Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and design review support to junior engineers and design staff.
- Support projects through design reviews, construction document development, and construction-related technical assistance.
Minimum Requirements
- BA/BS + 8 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in transportation engineering, roadway design, or a closely related discipline.
- Demonstrated experience in roadway and intersection design, including roundabouts, highway improvements, arterial roadways, and other transportation infrastructure projects.
- Wisconsin Professional Engineer (PE) license or the ability to obtain Wisconsin licensure.
- Wisconsin DOT Level 1 or higher Qualified Roundabout Designer certification, or demonstrated experience and the ability to obtain the applicable qualification.
- Proficiency with roadway design software, including AutoCAD Civil 3D and/or Bentley MicroStation and OpenRoads Designer.
- Experience preparing roadway plan sets, geometric design layouts, engineering calculations, quantities, cost estimates, technical reports, and construction documents.
- Experience working with WisDOT, county highway departments, municipalities, or other public-sector transportation clients, with knowledge of applicable design standards and project delivery requirements.
- Experience managing design tasks, coordinating multidisciplinary teams, monitoring project budgets and schedules, and delivering high-quality engineering work.
- Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership, mentor junior engineers, and collaborate effectively with clients and project stakeholders.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, sound engineering judgment, and the ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining technical quality and project deadlines.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint for engineering analysis, technical documentation, and client presentations.
