Reporting to the Head of IT Cloud & Hosting Services, EU & RoW, the Senior Cloud & Hosting Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, operation, and continuous evolution of secure, scalable, and resilient cloud and hosting platforms across Europe and Rest of World markets.

As the senior engineer for Cloud & Hosting services, the role provides deep expertise across Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and cloud platforms such as Google Cloud Platform (GCP), alongside traditional hosting technologies including colocation (Colo), virtualisation, compute, storage, backup, disaster recovery, and hybrid infrastructure solutions.

The role is accountable for leading, implementing and maintaining the technical standards, architectures, and engineering practices that underpin the Cloud & Hosting platform. This includes driving automation through Infrastructure as Code (IaC), configuration management, and platform engineering principles to deliver secure, repeatable, compliant, and cost-effective infrastructure at scale.

Working closely with Group Security, Global Networks, Enterprise Architecture, and regional technology teams, the Senior Cloud & Hosting Engineer ensures cloud and hosting services are secure by design, highly available, operationally resilient, and aligned to enterprise governance, security, and compliance requirements. The role also provides technical leadership across cloud networking, identity and access management, encryption, connectivity, observability, platform resilience, and operational excellence.

As the senior engineer within the Cloud & Hosting domain, the role evaluates emerging technologies, defines the strategic technical direction for the Cloud Engineering capability, owns engineering standards and reference architectures, and is accountable for recommending the cloud platform roadmap and technology investments. The role is the primary technical decision-maker for Cloud Engineering, operating within enterprise governance and collaborating with the Cloud & Hosting Solutions Architect, Cloud & Hosting TDA, Head of Cloud & Hosting Services, Head of Infrastructure & Services and Group Technology stakeholders to ensure alignment with wider business strategy.

Operating within a high-performing engineering team, the Senior Cloud & Hosting Engineer partners with regional IT leaders, managed service providers, and Group Technology colleagues to modernise the hosting estate, increase platform maturity, improve service reliability, optimise operational costs, and drive continuous improvement across cloud and hosting capabilities within Europe and ROW.

Cloud Platform Architecture & Engineering

• Design, implement, and continuously improve secure, scalable, and resilient cloud and hosting platforms across Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and cloud platforms such as Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

• Develop and maintain reference architectures, engineering standards, and reusable platform patterns that enable consistent deployment across Europe and RoW markets.

• Design and support hybrid infrastructure incorporating public cloud, private cloud, colocation (Colo), virtualisation platforms, and traditional hosting environments.

• Engineer highly available and resilient platform services including compute, storage, backup, disaster recovery, identity, networking, and platform management capabilities.

• Ensure cloud platforms are designed for operational excellence, scalability, performance, resilience, and cost optimisation.

• Collaborate with Enterprise Architecture, Security, and Infrastructure teams to align cloud platform designs with enterprise technology strategy.

Cloud Security & Platform Governance

• Design and implement secure-by-design cloud platforms, embedding security controls throughout the infrastructure lifecycle.

• Contribute to the definition and evolution of cloud security, networking, and hosting standards in collaboration with Group Security, Global WAN (GWAN), Enterprise Architecture, and regional stakeholders.

• Design and maintain cloud networking including Virtual Networks (VNets), VPCs, Transit Gateway, Cloud WAN, ExpressRoute, VPN, Private Link, Load Balancing, DNS, and hybrid connectivity.

• Implement and maintain cloud-native and third-party security technologies including Azure Firewall, AWS Network Firewall, Palo Alto, WAF, security groups, NSGs, and network segmentation.

• Maintain platform hardening standards, identity and access management controls, encryption standards, and privileged access models.

• Lead technical security reviews, infrastructure threat modelling, and remediation activities for cloud platform changes.
• Implement policy-based guardrails and preventative controls using native cloud governance capabilities

Infrastructure as Code & Platform Automation

• Own and continuously develop the Cloud & Hosting Infrastructure as Code (IaC) capability using Terraform and supporting automation frameworks.

• Develop reusable modules, landing zones, and deployment pipelines that provide secure, standardised infrastructure provisioning.

• Design and maintain CI/CD pipelines supporting automated testing, validation, deployment, and rollback of infrastructure changes.
• Automate operational activities including compliance validation, certificate lifecycle management, patching, platform health checks, and operational reporting.
• Develop tooling using PowerShell, Python, Bash, or equivalent scripting languages to improve operational efficiency and reduce manual intervention.
• Champion platform engineering, automation-first principles, and self-service capabilities across Cloud & Hosting services.
• Maintain version control, documentation, testing standards, and release governance for all automation assets.

Cloud Operations & Service Reliability

• Provide senior technical ownership for the operational health, availability, and performance of Cloud & Hosting platforms.

• Support and maintain cloud infrastructure including compute, storage, networking, identity, backup, disaster recovery, monitoring, and management services.

• Lead technical investigation and resolution of complex infrastructure incidents, driving root cause analysis and permanent corrective actions.

• Manage platform lifecycle activities including upgrades, migrations, service improvements, and technology refresh programmes.

• Monitor platform utilisation, capacity, resilience, and service health, implementing proactive improvements where required.

• Work closely with Managed Service Providers to ensure operational services meet agreed service levels and engineering standards.
• Maintain comprehensive technical documentation, operational runbooks, architecture diagrams, and service standards.

Standards, Governance & Market Enablement

• Drive consistent adoption of Cloud & Hosting standards, reference architectures, and engineering practices across Europe and RoW markets.

• Provide technical leadership and guidance to regional technology teams throughout solution design and implementation.

• Support markets during cloud transformation initiatives, migrations, and platform modernisation programmes.

• Ensure solutions remain compliant with enterprise governance, security, operational, and regulatory requirements.

• Identify and address technical debt, platform inconsistencies, and non-standard implementations.
• Escalate significant technical risks and governance exceptions through agreed management and architecture forums.

Technical Leadership & Continuous Improvement

• Act as the senior technical subject matter expert for Cloud & Hosting technologies across Europe and RoW organisation.

• Evaluate emerging cloud technologies, hosting platforms, AI-enabled operational tooling, and industry best practice to drive platform evolution.

• Produce technical recommendations supported by architectural trade-offs, risk analysis, operational considerations, and cost implications.

• Influence strategic technology decisions within Cloud & Hosting in collaboration with Architecture, Security, and Group Technology leadership.

• Drive continuous improvement across reliability, automation, observability, security, performance, and operational maturity.

• Promote engineering excellence, knowledge sharing, mentoring, and technical capability development across internal teams and partners.
• Identify opportunities to optimise cloud consumption through FinOps practices, rightsizing, automation, and architectural improvements.

Vendor & Service Provider Management

• Provide technical leadership and governance for Managed Service Providers delivering Cloud & Hosting services.

• Review technical deliverables, ensuring adherence to enterprise standards, security controls, and operational requirements.

• Participate in service reviews, problem management, and continual service improvement activities.

• Support technology selection, proof of concepts, and vendor evaluations for new cloud and hosting capabilities.
• Work collaboratively with vendors to resolve complex technical issues and improve platform reliability.
