Job Description:

Senior Compliance Manager, Analytics & Innovation | AI Governance & Trade Surveillance

Help shape how bp governs and applies Generative AI, Agentic AI and emerging technologies across its global Supply, Trading & Shipping business.

As Senior Compliance Manager, Analytics & Innovation, you will be a key Ethics & Compliance authority for AI governance, model risk and emerging technology. You will monitor external developments, evolve governance and compliance guidance, and translate new risks and opportunities into practical solutions.

Working across multiple regions, commodities and trading activities, you will partner with compliance, trading and technology teams to enhance compliance analytics, monitoring and trade-surveillance capabilities. You will identify and evaluate new AI use cases, including agentic solutions capable of supporting multi-step tasks and workflows, and help move ideas from early experimentation into controlled implementation.

This is a highly visible role, working with senior leaders across Supply, Trading & Shipping and participating in the Ethics & Compliance Extended Leadership Team. It offers the opportunity to lead new workstreams, develop others and influence the future direction of compliance analytics and innovation.

Location and working arrangements

This role is based at our Canary Wharf, London office and follows a hybrid working model, with regular in-office presence expected.

Key accountabilities

  • Provide leadership within the Analytics & Innovation team and across Supply, Trading & Shipping Ethics & Compliance, including line-management responsibility and colleague development.
  • Serve as a key Ethics & Compliance authority for Generative AI, Agentic AI, AI governance, model risk and emerging technologies.
  • Monitor industry developments, regulatory expectations and evolving risks to inform forward-looking governance, controls and compliance guidance.
  • Identify and evaluate Generative AI, Agentic AI, automation and advanced-analytics use cases, working with in-house technology teams to develop practical, well-governed solutions.
  • Help establish appropriate governance for agentic systems, including decision and action boundaries, human oversight, system access, permissions, auditability, ongoing monitoring and escalation.
  • Lead the enhancement of technology-enabled compliance monitoring, compliance analytics and trade-surveillance capabilities, including improvements to, or replacement of, existing tools.
  • Act as the primary liaison between Ethics & Compliance, Innovation & Engineering, and external technology providers delivering monitoring, surveillance, analytics and reporting solutions.
  • Own and maintain Ethics & Compliance control-framework governance, including control-design standards, ownership and accountability, documentation and evidence requirements, change control, issue management, periodic review and management reporting.
  • Provide oversight and constructive challenge on the design and operating effectiveness of Ethics & Compliance controls, supporting remediation and continuous improvement.
  • Support the Compliance Director in implementing the Ethics & Compliance strategy and maximising global-team effectiveness.
  • Support global project and programme delivery, and provide clear management information and insights to senior leaders.
  • Participate actively in the Global Supply, Trading & Shipping Ethics & Compliance Extended Leadership Team.
  • Strengthen trade-analytics capability through coaching, knowledge-sharing, guidance and training.
  • Provide support for Business Integrity and Supply, Trading & Shipping Ethics & Compliance enquiries and, in the event of a major enquiry or investigation, provide additional capacity to regional compliance teams.
  • Develop relationships and partnerships with the business, including senior stakeholders, and establish Ethics & Compliance as a trusted business partner.
  • Build strong working relationships with other Ethics & Compliance team members to ensure effective knowledge-sharing and the timely resolution of incidents across regions and businesses.
  • Maintain consistently high standards of ethics and compliance advice, challenge and oversight.

Essential skills and experience

  • Significant experience assessing, governing, enabling or deploying Generative AI, AI-enabled solutions, advanced analytics, automation or other emerging technologies within a regulated compliance, risk or control environment, with an understanding of Agentic AI and its evolving applications and risks.
  • Strong knowledge of AI governance and model-risk principles, including model limitations, data quality, human oversight, third-party risk, ongoing monitoring and proportionate control design.
  • Experience identifying emerging-technology use cases and translating regulatory, compliance or risk considerations into practical governance, controls and delivery requirements.
  • Strong technical fluency and the ability to work credibly with data, engineering, product and technology specialists. Deep software-engineering or model-development expertise is not required, but experience experimenting with enterprise AI tools, prototypes or bots would be valuable.
  • Significant experience designing, implementing or enhancing compliance monitoring, analytics or trade-surveillance capabilities, including working with technology teams or specialist vendors to deliver solutions.
  • Strong knowledge of regulated trading and market-conduct risk, gained within energy or commodity trading, wholesale banking, capital markets, an exchange, a trading venue, market surveillance or a closely related environment.
  • Strong understanding of financial regulation, exchange rules and surveillance expectations across complex products, trading strategies and jurisdictions, with experience engaging with regulators, exchanges or comparable external authorities. Direct energy or commodity-trading experience is advantageous, but strong adjacent regulated-trading experience will also be considered.
  • Strong experience in compliance, risk or control-framework governance, including control design, effectiveness, issue management, remediation and management reporting.
  • Evidence of leadership capability and a clear appetite to lead and develop others. This may have been gained through line management or project, programme, functional or matrix leadership.
  • Excellent judgement, communication and influencing skills, with the ability to explain complex technology and risk issues clearly, challenge constructively and build consensus with senior, technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Intellectual curiosity and strong analytical and problem-solving capability, with the creativity and practical mindset to turn emerging ideas into focused workstreams and measurable action.
