Senior Controls Engineer

Want to own a project from the first sketch to a fully running machine? Automation Services, Inc. (ASI) is hiring a Senior Controls Engineer to join our small, tight-knit team in Lake City, MN. Hybrid or remote is on the table for the right candidate.

Your Role Will Include:

• Design, program, test, and debug PLC and HMI control systems for machine and process automation.
• Independently lead field startup and commissioning — troubleshooting live and under pressure.
• Own projects end to end: design, panel layout, programming, testing, on-site startup, and customer handoff.
• Program and tune VFDs and servo/motion systems on multi-axis machinery.
• Produce electrical design and schematics in AutoCAD Electrical.
• Work directly with customers in the field, training operators and representing ASI on-site.

Qualifications:

Must-Have

• 5+ years designing and commissioning industrial control systems.
• 2-year degree in Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering Technology, or Electronics, or equivalent hands-on experience.
• Strong Studio 5000 (Logix) programming.
• Platform-agnostic HMI development experience.
• Hands-on VFD and servo/motion experience.
• AutoCAD Electrical proficiency.
• Working knowledge of UL 508A panel standards.
• Proven ability to start up and troubleshoot systems independently in the field.
• Willing to travel up to ~25% and work startup hours.

Preferred

• RSLogix 500 experience.
• FactoryTalk View SE experience.
• Prior sales, bidding, or estimating experience.
• Established relationships in industrial automation.

Physical Demands:

• Extended hours at a computer.
• 8–12 hour days during field commissioning; frequent walking, bending, squatting, reaching.
• Occasional lifting of parts up to 50 lbs to waist height.

Salary and Benefits:

• Full-time, hourly, overtime-eligible.
• Compensation commensurate with experience.

Location & Shift Times:

• Lake City, MN, or hybrid/remote for the right candidate (Metro, Southern MN, or western WI).
• Core hours roughly 7:00 AM–5:00/6:00 PM, with 8–12 hour days during commissioning.
