Senior DevOps Engineer

Senior DevOps Engineer | Remote Australia

We're working with an Australian data platform business looking for a senior hands-on DevOps & Platform Engineer to take ownership of the cloud infrastructure, security foundations and delivery platform supporting its product.

This is a principal-level individual contributor role. You won't be inheriting a large platform team or managing engineers. You'll be the person responsible for designing the foundation that a future team will build upon.

The opportunity

The existing AWS footprint is operational, but the business wants to move towards a deliberately designed, secure, multi-account platform with mature infrastructure as code, reliable delivery pipelines and strong developer experience.

What we're looking for

You'll need:

• Several years of hands-on infrastructure and DevOps engineering experience across AWS, Azure or GCP.
• Experience designing cloud organisation and account architecture, not just managing individual services.
• A track record of building infrastructure capabilities or platforms from scratch.
• Strong infrastructure as code and CI/CD experience.
• A practical understanding of security across identity, networking, hosts, containers, applications and data.
• The ability to write code, contribute tooling and collaborate credibly with software engineers.

Desirable experience

• Operating data platforms or distributed data infrastructure at meaningful scale.
• Apache Spark, Kafka, Trino/Presto, Solr, Iceberg, Airflow or similar technologies.
• Scala or another JVM language.
• Customer-deployed software, on-premises installations or restricted environments.
• Experience with IRAP, ISO 27001, SOC 2, Essential Eight or similar security and compliance requirements.
• Multi-cloud or hybrid environments, particularly AWS and Azure.

Who this role suits

This is for someone who has built this before and wants to own the technical decisions again.

You'll have significant latitude over architecture and implementation, with direct exposure to the impact of your decisions. It suits a senior individual contributor who enjoys building, solving complex infrastructure problems and establishing engineering standards.
