Senior Director, AP Test Publishing

College Board – Advanced Placement & Instruction

Location: This is a remote role. Candidates who live near CB offices have the option of being fully remote or hybrid (Tuesday and Wednesday in office). All CB employees are required to occasionally travel to meet in person for business purposes.

Role Type: This is a full-time position

About the Team

The College Board’s Advanced Placement and Instruction division (300+ staff) develops and administers coursework taken by more than 3 million students worldwide each school year, and the related subject-matter exams utilized by more than 4,000 colleges and universities for course placement and awarding of college credit. These include credit and placement examination programs like CLEP and ACCUplacer; Advanced Placement (AP) and Pre-AP courses in 40+ disciplines; and associated teacher professional learning programs.

The AP Test Publishing team manages the production of print materials for AP exams worldwide. In collaboration with College Board Operations and vendors, the team produces accommodated print, large print, Braille, and hybrid free response booklets — ensuring equitable, high-quality access for students requiring alternate formats.

About the Opportunity

The Senior Director, AP Test Publishing will collaborate with key organizational workstreams on the build and execution of requirements and processes for the evolving print exam needs of the AP program. This will require defining the development needs and requirements to build print exams in alignment with the current AP course and exam change roadmap. This role oversees content change alignment, planning, and execution for exam publishing and print needs with external vendors, maintaining and communicating detailed documentation and reporting across various interdependent workstreams led by a number of internal and external teams.

In this role, you will:

LEAD & MANAGE THE AP TEST PUBLISHING TEAM (10%)

  • Lead a team of two team members that is responsible for the annual production of print exam materials.
  • Set vision and priorities for the team, track and mange progress to goals, and provide coaching and support to ensure team members meet and exceed goals, remain engaged, and contribute meaningfully to our mission
  • Cultivate an inclusive and high achieving culture that enables all team members to live out College Board’s Operating Principles.
  • Bring proven leadership experience and consistently embody College Board’s Manager Expectations in your work.

TEST PUBLISHING GOVERNANCE & ARCHITECTURE (25%)

  • Own the enterprise Test Publishing operating model, including governance architecture, decision rights, and escalation structure, that enables consistent, scalable execution as the AP program insources assessment production and expands its internally owned exam portfolio.
  • Serve as system integrator and Tier 2 decision authority, adjudicating cross-portfolio tradeoffs across scope, timeline, quality, and cost. Steward material cross-subject and governance risks and resolve escalations that cannot be settled at the Director level.
  • Define, publish, and evolve enterprise Test Publishing standards and frameworks, QC architecture, workflow guardrails, and escalation models, grounded in retrospective data, to drive process integrity and reduce recurring cross-portfolio failure points.

PORTFOLIO DELIVERY & VENDOR OVERSIGHT (25%)

  • Direct sustained delivery of all internally owned AP print, accommodated, and Braille publishing commitments at full scale. Hold milestone integrity and portfolio readiness through delegated project-management and vendor-systems leads while retaining accountability for outcomes.
  • Own senior-level external alignment and vendor governance with print and production vendors, including SLA and performance oversight, contract-level escalation, and quality-control accountability, as the sustained operating relationship supporting insourced production.
  • Maintain and communicate detailed documentation and reporting across interdependent internal and external workstreams, ensuring transparency into progress, dependencies, and risk.

CHANGE MANAGEMENT & INSOURCING ADOPTION (25%)

  • Lead change management for AP Test Publishing as the program insources assessment production from external test developers, building the communication, coordination, and adoption plans that move new publishing workflows, roles, and requirements into steady-state practice.
  • Establish and reinforce clear roles, decision rights, and handoffs across internal teams and vendors, sponsoring training and stakeholder alignment to sustain adoption across all subject types.

CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT, INNOVATION, & TEAM ENABLEMENT (15%)

  • Expand responsible use of generative AI to improve Test Publishing quality and efficiency, such as AI-assisted quality control and analysis of prior-cycle feedback to strengthen first-pass vendor output.
  • Lead structured, data-informed process improvement, drawing on project tracking, stakeholder feedback, and issue logs, to refine publishing workflows across administrations.

About You

You have:

  • Expertise in operational excellence with 7+ years program and/or project management work, preferably in the education industry.
  • A strategic, process-oriented approach: you drive strategic planning, program development, and change management, while identifying risks early and solving problems with creativity.
  • A high degree of ownership and accountability: you consistently deliver results in fast-paced, high-profile environments, backed by strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills: you build positive, collaborative working relationships at every level of the organization.
  • A strategic and inclusive leadership style: you set clear priorities, build effective team structures, plan for future needs, and foster a culture of belonging.
  • A proven ability to drive performance and growth: you set high expectations, deliver real-time, evidence-based feedback, and coach team members to take smart risks, stretch their skills, and achieve meaningful impact.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in business or related field is required; advanced degree preferred.
  • The ability to travel 4-6 times a year to College Board offices or on behalf of College Board business.

All roles at College Board require:

  • A passion for expanding educational and career opportunities and mission-driven work
  • Curiosity and enthusiasm for emerging technologies, with a willingness to experiment with and adopt new AI-driven solutions and comfort with learning and applying new digital tools independently and proactively.
  • Clear and concise communication skills, written and verbal
  • A learner's mindset and a commitment to growth: welcoming diverse perspectives, giving and receiving timely, respectful feedback, and continuously improving through iterative learning and user input.
  • A drive for impact and excellence: solving complex problems, making data-informed decisions, prioritizing what matters most, and continuously improving through learning, user input, and external benchmarking.
  • A collaborative and empathetic approach: working across differences, fostering trust, and contributing to a culture of shared success
  • Authorization to work in the United States
