Position Summary
At BGCMD, safety is paramount. The Senior Director of Safety and Compliance (SDSC) is responsible for the organization’s various functions that ensure the highest level of safety and safety-related regulatory compliance for staff and Club members. The SDSC ensures that every employee at BGCMD upholds the highest level of safety and oversees the successful execution of safety related policies and practices. Further, the SDSC ensures that the organization remains in good standing and compliance with all safety related laws, policies, regulations, and expectations.
Core Responsibilities
Safety Practices Oversight & Management
- Oversee an organizational and systemic approach to proactive safety including incident prevention practices
- Develop and monitor safety metrics for all 25 Clubs by analyzing trends from the incident report process
- Oversee the suspension and re-entry process for Club members across the organization
- Oversee organizational incident response, including documentation in incident reports; developing, improving and maintaining the incident reporting process and associated systems; ensuring an appropriate level of oversight, hierarchy, and escalation criteria is clearly identified for each type and severity of incident
- Serve as primary point of escalation for incidents from Club staff, including being on call until close of Clubs (8pm weeknights)
- Serve as the point of escalation for all 25 Clubs for critical incidents and critical incident reporting to BGCA
- Conduct safety walkthroughs and debriefs with each Club on a regular and ongoing basis, including conduct regular club visits across BGCMD to observe programming and assess safety and risk management while ensuring all Clubs are inclusive environments for Club members, Club families and Club staff
- Partner with Facilities to maintain the transportation fleet for BGCMD and lead the coordination of transportation services for all 25 Clubs for any organization-wide special events
- Support Operations leadership with monitoring inclement weather closures and impact on transportation
- Support staff-to-member ratios and program delivery at any Club when additional administrative staffing is needed to maintain safety and compliance with BGCA and BGCMD policies and procedures
Safety Policies & Procedures Compliance
- Establish and maintain BGCMD’s safety policies and standard operating procedures, including incident response and emergency response
- Annually, review and update the organization’s incident response plan
- Manage and track safety data, including incident report data, Club safety walkthroughs, and vehicle safety checklists
- Set organizational safety goals and measure progress towards them
- Provide leadership on BGCMD’s Safety Committee and play a key role in developing organizational policies, procedures, and best practices that proactively identify and mitigate safety risks across the organization
- Report out on internal safety reviews to senior management and the Board of Directors
- Manage the organization’s annual BGCA safety audit
- Lead the Club charter process in alignment with BGCA policies and procedures
- Ensure the organization is compliant with OSHA standards and regulations
Training
- Hold primary responsibility for training new hires on safety imperatives during new hire orientation and onboarding
- Provide ongoing safety training during monthly Club leader meetings, quarterly all-staff professional development training, and at Club sites as needed
- Facilitate relevant safety & emergency response trainings across BGCMD to ensure operations staff are informed and prepared to address incidents in accordance with BGCMD and BGCA safety guidelines
- Steward a culture of safety within BGCMD which ensure that all employees understand and feel ownership for safety
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in human services, social services, public administration, safety, risk management, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.
- Five or more years of progressively responsible experience in safety, risk management, compliance, program operations, or related function.
- At least three years of experience leading safety, compliance, or operational functions within a multi-site organization.
- Demonstrated experience developing, implementing, and monitoring organizational policies, procedures, standard operating procedures, and safety practices.
- Experience responding to and managing incidents, including documentation, escalation, follow-up, and organizational learning.
- Demonstrated ability to use data and trends to identify risks, establish priorities, and improve organizational practices.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to facilitate training, communicate expectations, and influence staff and leaders across an organization.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, exercise sound judgment, and respond effectively to time-sensitive or high-risk situations.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to learn and effectively use organizational technology and reporting systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience leading safety, risk management, or compliance functions within a youth-serving, nonprofit, education, recreation, or similarly complex organization.
- Experience supporting operations across multiple locations or program sites.
- Knowledge of safety and regulatory requirements applicable to youth-serving organizations, including OSHA requirements and emergency preparedness practices.
- Experience working with Boys & Girls Clubs of America safety standards, membership requirements, or Club charter processes.
- Experience designing and facilitating safety, emergency preparedness, or compliance training for employees and organizational leaders.
- Experience developing organizational safety metrics, dashboards, key performance indicators, and continuous improvement strategies.
- Demonstrated success working cross-functionally with Operations, Human Resources, Facilities, Finance, and other organizational functions.
- Advanced degree or professional certification in safety, risk management, emergency management, public administration, or related discipline.
Supervisory & Administrative Responsibilities
- This position does not directly supervise any other roles, but will be responsible for ensuring accountability from all other roles in the organization as they relate to safety
- Assist in recruitment, hiring, training, and managing staff and volunteers.
- Provide ongoing professional development to BGCMD staff
- Keep data real-time accurate to enable timely reporting on safety-related measures
- Provide accountability for the consistent implementation of best practices, systems, and processes across operations and programming.
Conditions of Employment
- Must be able to pass criminal and driving records investigations, and reference checks.
- A valid driver's license and ability to be insured under the company's insurance policy.
- The successful candidate will primarily work indoors. Accordingly, the ability to use a variety of equipment including janitorial and office equipment is required. The job requires the ability to stand for extended periods, kneel, reach, bend, and lift objects weighing in excess of 25 lbs. Outdoor work and moderate physically demanding activities will be required regularly.
- The ability to read and write is necessary to complete reports, properly document programs, and utilize organizational data.

In-Office and Remote Work
This position works primarily at the Program Support Center but may occasionally work from other BGCMD facilities as necessary. It is expected that this role will spend the majority of their time at Club locations. All remote work and other flexible work arrangements must be approved prior to implementation.
