ABOUT CANEIL
CANEIL is continuing to expand its in-house electrical engineering team to support a growing portfolio of transmission, utility, industrial, renewable energy, and mission-critical infrastructure projects throughout Canada and the United States.
We are seeking experienced Senior Electrical Engineers and Designers to join our substation engineering team in one of three core areas: Power System Studies & Modeling, Substation Physical Design, and Substation Protection & Control. Successful candidates will lead technical work within their specialty, review deliverables, coordinate with multidisciplinary project teams, and mentor junior personnel.
CANEIL offers flexible work arrangements, including remote, hybrid, and in-office options, depending on candidate location, project requirements, and team needs. Our primary offices are located in Edmonton, Alberta, and the Houston, Texas area.
OPEN ROLES
- Senior Electrical Engineer – Power System Studies & Modeling: Develop and validate power system models and perform short-circuit, load flow, protective device coordination, arc flash (IEEE 1584 / NFPA 70E), motor-starting, harmonic, and transient studies, with clear, client-ready reports and recommendations. Advanced proficiency with SKM PowerTools is required; extensive experience with comparable software (e.g., ETAP, EasyPower, CYME, PSCAD) is also highly beneficial.
- Senior Electrical Engineer/Designer – Substation Physical Design: Lead physical design packages for medium- and high-voltage substations, including single-line diagrams, general arrangements, plans and elevations, bus layouts and electrical clearances, grounding, lightning shielding, conduit and cable routing, station service, and equipment details. Experience from approximately 15 kV through 500 kV or higher, and working knowledge of IEEE 80, 605, 998, 1427, and NESC, are expected.
- Senior Electrical Engineer/Designer – Substation Protection & Control: Lead P&C engineering and design packages, including one-line and three-line diagrams, protection and control schematics, AC/DC elementary diagrams, wiring and interconnection drawings, relay panel drawings, cable schedules, and SCADA/communications documentation, along with protection philosophies and control schemes. Experience from approximately 15 kV through 500 kV is preferred, with high-voltage experience highly preferred.
OTHER SUBSTATION-RELATED ENGINEERS & DESIGNERS
Don’t see your exact discipline listed? We are always expanding our team. Engineers and designers working in other areas associated with substation engineering and design, such as Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), transmission lines, structural, civil, telecommunications, or other related disciplines, are also invited to apply. We welcome the opportunity to connect with experienced professionals and will work with you to find the right fit.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead the development, review, and delivery of models, studies, drawings, and design packages within your area of specialty.

- Perform technical reviews and QA/QC of drawings, models, calculations, specifications, and reports.
- Support projects through design, procurement, construction, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
- Participate in client meetings, design reviews, and multidisciplinary coordination meetings.
- Assist with project scoping, proposals, level-of-effort estimates, schedules, and technical planning.
- Mentor junior and intermediate engineers and designers.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
