SENIOR EMBEDDED LINUX, FIRMWARE & BACKEND ENGINEERLytup Power Systems Inc. | Fully Remote | Contract
About LytupLytup Power Systems Inc. is a Canadian cleantech company developing energy storage, edge computing, and Energy Management Software (EMS) technologies. Our systems integrate batteries, solar PV, generators, meters, EV infrastructure, and other distributed energy assets through our LMH edge hardware and EMS platform.
The RoleWe are looking for an experienced engineer to own the core technical layer connecting field equipment to Lytup's backend platforms. This role combines embedded Linux and firmware development, industrial communications, networking, backend engineering, APIs, and device security.
Equipment > LMH Edge Device > Industrial Protocols > Network/TLS > MQTT/API > Golang Backend > Database/EMS
You will work alongside our internal engineering team, which handles frontend, mobile applications, cloud deployment, and broader platform operations.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and maintain software for LMH Node 1 and future Linux-based edge devices.
- Build integrations for BESS/BMS, solar inverters, generators, meters, EV chargers, battery swapping systems, and other industrial equipment.
- Develop and troubleshoot communications using CAN, RS485/RS232, Modbus RTU/TCP, TCP/IP, Ethernet, MQTT and REST APIs.
- Develop device drivers, protocol parsers, configurable equipment adapters, and reliable communication services.
- Develop and maintain Golang backend services, MQTT messaging, PostgreSQL, telemetry ingestion, remote monitoring/control, provisioning, and API integrations.
- Improve reliability through retry logic, buffering, synchronization, reconnection, offline operation, and fault recovery.
- Own secure device-to-platform communications using TLS/mTLS, X.509 certificates and PKI, including provisioning, trust chains, authentication, renewal/rotation, secure credential storage, and OTA trust/certificate updates.
- Integrate third-party manufacturer APIs and equipment protocols, troubleshoot issues across hardware interfaces, Linux, networking, security, backend services, and databases, and maintain clear technical documentation.
- Embedded Linux and firmware/embedded systems development.
- Golang, MQTT, PostgreSQL, REST APIs, and backend services.
- TCP/IP networking and Linux networking/troubleshooting.
- CAN, RS485/RS232/UART, Modbus RTU/TCP, and device-to-server communications.
- C/C++ or another systems-level language and ARM/Linux edge platforms such as Raspberry Pi Compute Module or similar.
- TLS/mTLS, X.509 certificates, PKI, certificate authorities, secure MQTT/HTTPS, device authentication, and certificate lifecycle management.
- Ability to debug across both the device/edge layer and backend layer, rather than working only in one.
Experience with BESS/BMS, solar inverters, generators, EV charging or battery swapping, OCPP, SunSpec, CANopen, BACnet, Yocto/Buildroot, Docker/Podman, OTA updates, secure boot, AWS/DevOps, frontend or mobile development, app-store releases, PCB schematic review, electronics hardware debugging, or electronics manufacturing is beneficial but not required.
Team StructurePrimary ownership: Embedded Linux + Firmware + Industrial Protocols + Networking + Device Security + Backend Services + APIs
Existing team leads: Frontend + Mobile Applications + AWS/Cloud Deployment + Application Releases.
Backend development will be shared so core platform knowledge remains internal across multiple engineers.
