Key Responsibilities
This role isn’t just important – it’s critical. You will have the opportunity to work with the Leadership Team to vision, plan and deliver the Power System and market of the future. To do this you will work collaboratively across the organisation and with our stakeholders as we strive to transform the Power System for Future Generations.
The successful role holder will have the opportunity to work in a fast-paced, highly collaborative and specialised work environment. You will join the Tools & Models team in FO and will lead initiatives aimed to uplift Power System Modelling and Simulation capabilities that support effective planning and decision making operations studies. Your tasks will include some of the following:
Use expertise and insight to inform our vision for operation of the future power system;
Analyse industry and technology trends and determine their potential impact on the team / directorate;
Technical Lead for key strategic projects and engagement with multiple stakeholders for the uplifting of modelling and simulations capabilities across the organisation.
Continually review and improve our existing Power System Analysis Tools, Model Quality Testing and Validation Processes over a range of platforms, for example through automation and data analytics;
Support the development of strategic approaches for addressing future modelling and simulation needs, including single source of truth, model and data management, version control, model portability, cross-validation and automation.
Lead the implementation of company ElectroMagnetic Transients (EMT) Roadmap, including the development of a wide-area EMT model and the definition of high performance computing hardware requirements.
Lead the implementation, and periodic review, of company Grid Forming (GFM) Strategy to facilitate integration of advanced control capabilities in the Irish Grid.
Lead the analysis, definition and implementation of new system strength metrics, including impedance-based stability screening process, to support the evolution of company operational policy and the stability assessment of new customer connections.
Support the development of new functionality and advanced models for Look Ahead Dynamic Stability Assessment tool (LSAT) and Voltage Trajectory Tool (VTT), running 24/7 in the Control Rooms to facilitate operations with world leading levels of Wind and Solar Renewable Generation;
Continually improve how we use our range of system study tools, for example through automation and data analytics;
Coach and provide on-the job training of DSA Tools software and results analysis to junior team members;
Apply skills, knowledge and experience to effectively deliver on the team’s objectives, overcoming new challenges and technical issues as they arise;
Communicate effectively to customers, business, and wider stakeholders, as well as the senior management team, via meetings, presentations and reports;
Represent the company externally at national, European, and global levels, engaging in external forums and bodies as appropriate;
Within the team, foster the adoption of a proactive innovative stakeholder engagement approach and the development of high-performance capabilities and behaviours.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience. The role holder will have the following:
Strong technical skills and familiarity with the Ireland and Northern Ireland power system;
A degree in electrical engineering or a closely related discipline, typically with 610+ years relevant experience with a solid background on Power System Dynamic Modelling and Analysis in phasor domain and EMT (high‑fidelity electromagnetic transient studies), in DIgSILENT PowerFactory’s domain holistic understanding of the electricity industry;
Deep understanding of technical challenges associated with operation of Inverter-Based Resources (IBRs) dominated Power Systems, emerging new (in)stability phenomena, control interactions, system strength, etc; and the most appropriate tools and methods to investigate them.
Strong technical skills and knowledge of the Ireland and Northern Ireland power system;
Substantial Experience of carrying out Technical Power System Modelling and Analysis using commercial software tools such as DSA Tools, PSS/E, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSCAD, EMTP and Matlab; etc. and/or EMT (high‑fidelity electromagnetic transient studies) modelling software,
Knowledge of EMS & SCADA Systems: Understanding of State Estimation applications.
Experience in and developing bespoke tools to integrate with the Commercial Software using programming languages such as Python. Experience of Techno-Economic Analysis (e.g. using Plexos) would also be beneficial;
Understanding of state of the art technologies and trends in the field of Power System Modelling and Stability Analysis, including data-driven and AI use cases to improve business processes.
Experience in Model Quality Testing and Model Validation in phasor domain and EMT (high‑fidelity electromagnetic transient studies), in DIgSILENT PowerFactory’s built‑in simulation module inside platforms.
Experience with System Studies in the RMS domain, with an in-depth understanding of frequency response, interconnectors, data centres, system protection, wind generation, and BESS in both frequency and Voltage/Reactive Power Domains, particularly in large-scale power systems with diverse renewable generation resources;
Ability to comprehend and address complex Power System Operational issues/phenomena, carry out Power System Optimisation and automation of bulk Power System Studies;
Experience and understanding of the operational aspects and system services, and the implementation of these to both short and long-term operational studies, establishing operational policies and setting/relaxing operational system constraints;
Familiarity with dynamic security assessment, state-estimation, MMS/scheduling, RES generation dispatch tools and relevant processes and with Power Systems with dominant Renewable Generation Resources, low system inertia and HVDC Interconnected Power Systems.
An understanding of the Future Power System challenges, particularly evolving system flexibility needs and system ramping, response and reserve services, flow-based market coupling, generation adequacy, dispatch/scheduling principles & models.
Ability and experience in analysing and validating system events/disturbances;
Knowledge and experience with new technologies such as grid-forming GFM and e-statcoms, data centres and synchronous condensers.
Strong Analysis, judgement and problem-solving skills along with an ability to make decisions and recommendations in a changing and dynamic environment;
Excellent organisational skills and proven ability to lead and deliver on a range of technical projects; strong track record of delivery;
Expertise in conceiving and introducing innovative ideas, solutions or new ways of doing things to solve business and engineering problems, collaborating with experts along the way;
Ability to guide, persuade and influence others through developed skills of communication and diplomacy;
