About the Role

Lead AI development and technical operations at an education technology startup building tools to analyze handwritten student work and help educators understand student thinking. Reporting to the CEO, you will shape the technical roadmap and help expand the platform to new subjects and grade levels.

What You'll Do

  • Own and improve AI and machine learning systems that use computer vision, natural language processing, and multimodal analysis.

  • Develop proofs of concept into production features as the platform expands beyond math into subjects such as English language arts and science.

  • Strengthen evaluation datasets, model monitoring, and performance observability.

  • Coordinate with external engineering vendors to communicate priorities, support technical quality, and maintain alignment.

  • Explain technical plans and complex concepts to the CEO and other non-technical stakeholders.

What We're Looking For

  • Four to eight years of experience in AI or machine learning development, including hands-on work building end-to-end AI products from proof of concept through deployment.

  • Experience developing models through original experimentation and dataset creation, beyond integrating third-party APIs.

  • Experience deploying in-house models, running inference, and working with LLM integrations.

  • Knowledge of cloud infrastructure and MLOps, including AWS, Google Cloud, or Modal.

  • Experience managing external engineering contractors or vendors, and communicating technical roadmaps to non-technical audiences.

  • Familiarity with Python, FastAPI, Django, React, Datadog, Weights & Biases, Hugging Face, vLLM, SGLang, and related development and testing tools.

  • Education technology experience is useful. Experience managing technical professionals or working in social impact sectors is also relevant.

  • Ability to work US time zones and current work authorization in your country of residence. Visa sponsorship is not available.
