CANEIL is continuing to expand its in-house engineering team to support a growing portfolio of mission-critical, utility, industrial, and infrastructure projects throughout Canada and the United States. Data centre development in Alberta and across North America is scaling rapidly, and we are building the team to support it.
We are seeking Senior Engineers and Designers in three disciplines — Electrical, Mechanical, and Structural — with experience in the design of data centres and comparable mission-critical facilities. Successful candidates will lead the development and review of design packages within their discipline while providing technical guidance to project teams and junior personnel. Applicants should indicate which discipline they are applying for.
CANEIL offers flexible work arrangements, including remote, hybrid, and in-office options, depending on candidate location, project requirements, and team needs. Our primary offices are located in Edmonton, Alberta, and the Houston, Texas area.
POSITION SUMMARY
These positions are intended for experienced mission-critical design professionals who enjoy detailed engineering work, solving complex capacity, redundancy, and coordination challenges, and producing accurate, constructible, and defensible deliverables. Successful candidates will lead design activities from basis of design through detailed design, coordination, technical review, construction support, and commissioning.
A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience is required, including demonstrated data centre or mission-critical facility work. Professional Engineers and senior designers with substantially greater experience are strongly encouraged to apply.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES – ALL DISCIPLINES
- Lead the development, review, and delivery of discipline design packages from basis of design through construction documents and issued-for-construction, and maintain design criteria, capacity and load tracking, and redundancy topologies, applying the distinction between concurrent maintainability and fault tolerance correctly.
- Coordinate with clients, utilities, vendors, and the other engineering, architectural, fire protection, and controls disciplines, resolving technical, spatial, and constructability issues, and perform technical reviews and QA/QC of design packages.
- Author sequences of operation, failure-mode matrices, and design narratives, and support commissioning from factory acceptance testing through functional performance and integrated systems testing.
- Support projects through procurement, construction administration, installation, and troubleshooting, and assist with project scoping, proposals, and estimates.
- Mentor junior and intermediate engineers and designers, and remain current with applicable codes, standards, and industry practices.
DISCIPLINE-SPECIFIC SCOPE
Electrical
- Utility service coordination, medium-voltage distribution, unit substations and MV switchgear, and standby generator plants with paralleling switchgear and fuel systems.
- UPS systems and critical power topologies, including N+1, 2N, distributed redundant, and block redundant configurations, static transfer switches, PDUs, RPPs, and overhead busway.
- Critical power one-lines and risers, panel and feeder schedules, grounding and bonding, lightning protection, lighting, fire alarm, and EPMS design with interfaces to BMS, DCIM, and SCADA.
- Power system studies, including load flow, short circuit, coordination, arc flash, generator step-load, harmonics, and reliability assessment.
Mechanical
- Chilled water plants, chiller selection, distribution, cooling towers, pumping, and thermal storage for continuous cooling.
- Air-side design including CRAH and fan-wall systems, hot and cold aisle containment, airside and waterside economization, and CFD modelling of white space.
- Liquid cooling for AI and high-performance computing, including direct-to-chip cold plates, cooling distribution units, rear-door heat exchangers, immersion, and the interface between technology cooling and facility water loops.
- Design for rack densities from conventional air-cooled halls through 100 kW and higher per rack, including coolant chemistry, leak detection, and containment.
- Fire protection coordination, generator exhaust and fuel systems, plumbing, room ventilation, and mechanical redundancy strategies.
Structural
- Building structure for large-footprint and multi-storey facilities, including tilt-up and precast concrete, long-span steel, foundations, and slab-on-grade for heavy loads.
- Equipment and housekeeping pads, generator yards, fuel tank foundations, acoustic enclosures, and crane and rigging access.
- Rooftop equipment support and roof loading, raised access floor systems, and the design implications of slab-on-grade halls with overhead busway and piping.
- Seismic bracing and anchorage of critical non-structural components, with attention to the elevated importance factors applied to essential facilities, and structural design of prefabricated and modular skids.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS – ALL DISCIPLINES
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Structural/Civil Engineering, or an engineering technology diploma with substantial, directly relevant design experience.
- Minimum of 10 years of relevant, hands-on engineering and detailed design experience, including demonstrated data centre or mission-critical facility work.
- Working knowledge of the codes and standards applicable to your discipline, including the Uptime Institute Tier Standard, ANSI/TIA-942, ANSI/BICSI 002, the National Building Code of Canada and the Alberta Building Code, the International Building Code, CSA C22.1 (Canadian Electrical Code), NFPA 70, and NFPA 75.
- Ability to interpret equipment specifications, vendor drawings, owner's project requirements, and complex multidisciplinary documentation, with the judgment to identify design conflicts and unsuitable engineering assumptions.
- Proficiency with Revit, AutoCAD, and Bluebeam; Navisworks and common data environment experience is an asset.
- Strong technical writing, communication, and client-facing skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects, deliverables, and deadlines.
- P.Eng. in Canada or PE in the United States is preferred. Candidates eligible to obtain registration within a reasonable timeframe may also be considered.
- Legally eligible to work in the country where the position is based.
DISCIPLINE-SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
- Electrical. NFPA 70E, NFPA 110, IEEE 1584, IEEE 519, and the IEEE 3006 series; ETAP, SKM PowerTools, EasyPower, or comparable software.
- Mechanical. ASHRAE TC 9.9 thermal guidelines, ASHRAE 90.4 and 90.1, NFPA 13, 72, and 2001; Trane TRACE 3D Plus, Carrier HAP, or IES VE. CFD experience with Cadence Reality DC (formerly 6SigmaDCX) or Ansys is strongly preferred.
- Structural. NBC Part 4, CSA A23.3 and S16, and ASCE 7 and ACI 318 for US projects; ETABS, RISA, RAM, SAP2000, SAFE, or STAAD.Pro.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience on hyperscale, colocation, enterprise, or AI and high-performance computing facilities, including greenfield campuses, expansions, and retrofits, and experience supporting Uptime Institute Tier Certification or TIA-942 rated certification.
- Experience with the five-level commissioning process, including integrated systems testing and scripted failure-mode and black-start testing.
- Experience with behind-the-meter and on-site generation, battery energy storage integration, and utility interconnection in constrained markets, including AESO large-load interconnection in Alberta.
- Experience with cold-climate design, including freeze protection, glycol systems, winter generator starting, and snow and drift loading, and with modular construction.
- Familiarity with PUE and WUE targets, energy code compliance paths, and LEED, and previous consulting experience on projects in Canada and the United States.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
- The expected base salary range for these positions is $120,000–$160,000 per year, based on discipline, experience, qualifications, professional designation, location, and overall suitability for the role.
- Candidates with significantly greater experience, specialized expertise, or a record of leading complex mission-critical projects may be considered above the stated range. All candidates are assessed individually.
- Contract compensation may also be considered for candidates engaged on a contract basis.
