Axion Consultancy Ltd — Overview Axion Consultancy Ltd is a specialist fire safety engineering and fire safety compliance business within the Riskhub Group, offering fire safety services including fire risk assessments, fire door inspections, asset surveys, fire strategy and fire engineering services. The team works closely with housing associations, local authorities, and building stock managers to ensure their properties remain safe, compliant, and audit-ready — managing the scheduling, tracking, and completion of large-scale compliance programmes across complex property portfolios. This is a fast-paced, data-intensive operational environment where delivery excellence, analytical rigour, and strong people leadership are essential. Senior Fire Surveyor Reports to: Fire Risk Management Director Location: Remote — a mix of site-based surveying, working from home and time in our London hub (Farringdon) Employment Type: Full-time, permanent — we are also open to engaging the right individual as a trusted sub-contractor (see below) Hours of work: 40 hours per week Salary: £50,000 – £70,000 depending on experience and depth of technical knowledge (permanent) / competitive day rate (sub-contract) About Axion / Riskhub Group Axion Consultancy is part of the Riskhub Group. We’re a passionate and collaborative team united by a shared goal: revolutionising property compliance through innovative technology. We take immense pride in our achievements, knowing that none of it would be possible without the dedication and talent of our people. As an energetic, forward-thinking business, we are all about our people. We are growing rapidly year-on-year and it’s the people within the business that powers it. We are on the lookout for dedicated, ambitious colleagues who want to be part of a team where everyone’s ideas are welcome, and everyone’s role is essential to our collective growth and success. The core set of behaviours that characterise our ethos and drive everything we do are: We speak clearly, honestly and with passion for what we do. We take time to understand problems so we can give confident solutions. We are a unified team, developing Riskhub together, because we believe what we’re doing is good. Everyone’s ideas are valid and welcome. Our entire team is empowered to make decisions. We get things done. Role Purpose This is a senior, hands-on surveying role at the centre of our fire safety compliance and remediation work. You will lead fire risk assessment and survey instructions across residential, mixed-use and complex portfolios — from Type 1 through to intrusive Type 4 assessments, external wall appraisals and compartmentation surveys — and turn what you find on site into clear, defensible advice our clients can act on. You will also act as a checker and technical reference point for others, and your expertise will directly shape how a growing consultancy delivers. We are equally interested in fire surveyors and building surveyors with strong fire competence. If you can evidence the competence to deliver all or most of the responsibilities below, we would like to talk to you. Senior Fire Surveyor – Job Description (Core Responsibilities) Complete Fire Risk Assessments (to include residential Type 1 to Type 4), including intrusive assessments and construction-phase FRAs, in line with PAS 79, BS 9792and applicable guidance; Carry out site surveys in support of Fire Risk Appraisal of External Walls (FRAEW) works under PAS 9980, gathering the evidence needed to support appraisal and remediation decisions; Undertake compartmentation surveys, identifying and reporting on breaches, deficiencies and remedial priorities; Support external wall remediation projects, including survey work, opening-up strategies, specification input and monitoring of remedial works; Conduct RIBA Stage 5 inspections on new build projects, reporting on compliance against the approved fire strategy and design intent; Produce fire safety technical notes, survey reports and remediation recommendations that are clear, evidence-based and appropriate to the audience; Apply a working understanding of fire engineering principles in support of design and consultancy works, including ADB, BS 9991, BS 9999 and relevant HTM guidance; Interpret and apply the requirements of the Building Safety Act 2022, the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 and the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 to client portfolios; Act as a checker on reports as part of our three-stage internal review process, and conduct peer reviews; Provide support to junior surveyors and assessors and encourage their development; you may be assigned as a buddy to a graduate or trainee colleague and would be expected to check in with them monthly on progress; Brief, oversee and quality-check the work of trusted sub-contractors engaged on your instructions, ensuring they are competent, properly resourced and delivering to Axion’s standards; Act as a primary point of contact for clients on assigned instructions, attending client and design team meetings in person or remotely; Ensure consistency in technical quality, record-keeping and communication with clients, including accurate and timely use of our compliance platforms; Work within your level of competence at all times, escalating matters that fall outside it; Maintain a CPD log with an aim to become a member of your desired institution or chartered (IFE, RICS, CABE, CIOB etc.). Desirable Skills RICS Level 6 in External Walls, or equivalent demonstrable FRAEW competence; Experience delivering large-scale compliance programmes for housing associations, local authorities or building stock managers; Experience of higher-risk buildings and the gateway process under the Building Safety Act 2022; Familiarity with the golden thread and digital information management for building safety; Fire door inspection and asset survey experience (e.g. FDIS or equivalent); A competent fire risk assessor Project management experience — the ability to run instructions and programmes end to end, acting as primary client contact, managing fee, programme and scope on assigned projects; Experience mentoring, checking or supervising other surveyors; Attending client events and contributing to business development. Personal Skills: · Excellent attention to detail and analytical thinking; · Strong report-writing skills, with the ability to evidence findings and justify recommendations; · Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including with residents and building occupants on site; · Ability to work independently and manage your own diary across multiple sites; · Proactive approach to problem-solving and technical challenges; · Commitment to professional development and continuing education; · Strong time management and ability to manage multiple projects concurrently; · Sound judgement in knowing when to escalate and when to decide; · A personable, down-to-earth manner with colleagues, clients and the residents you meet on site. Who We Want Someone at senior level who takes genuine pride in their craft — who doesn’t cut corners, who cares about the quality of what goes out the door, and who wants to be part of something growing with real purpose. Just as importantly, we only employ nice, personable people. Technical competence gets you through the door, but how you treat your colleagues, our clients and the residents you meet on site matters to us just as much. We are still small enough that every appointment shapes the culture, and we look after that carefully. If you are the sort of person people are glad to see turn up on site and easy to work alongside, please do apply. Qualifications/Experience: · Minimum: Level 4 Diploma in Fire Safety (or equivalent demonstrable competence); · Ideally: Level 5 in Fire Engineering Design or Level 5 in Fire Risk Assessment; · A real bonus: RICS Level 6 in External Walls; · A degree or HND/HNC in fire engineering, building surveying, building services or a related discipline is welcome but not essential where competence is otherwise evidenced; · Membership of, or working towards membership of, a relevant professional body (IFE, RICS, CABE, CIOB or equivalent); · Typically 5+ years’ relevant experience in fire risk assessment, fire surveying or building surveying with a strong fire safety focus, at senior level; · A portfolio or sample reports that evidence your competence across the responsibilities above; · Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to site. · CSCS card holder Above all, we are looking for demonstrable competence. If you can evidence the knowledge, experience and professional judgement to deliver the work described above, we want to hear from you. Sub-Contractor Engagement Our preference is a permanent appointment, but we are open to engaging the right individual on a sub-contract basis. This suits someone who values flexibility and autonomy but still wants to be embedded within a growing consultancy where their contribution genuinely matters — a long-term, trusted working relationship rather than ad-hoc instructions. What we would need from a sub-contractor: The ability to deliver the same scope of technical work described above, to the same standard and within the same review process; Flexibility to respond to project demands, with the capacity to scale up when the pipeline is busy; Full professional indemnity insurance at a level appropriate to the work, together with public liability cover; Qualifications and evidenced competence as set out above, supported by an up-to-date CPD record; A willingness to work within Axion’s quality management system, including our three-stage internal review process; Use of Riskhub for reporting, project tracking and record-keeping; Strong communication skills — you may work independently, but you are never working in isolation; The relevant business arrangements in place (limited company or self-employed status, right to work, and satisfactory completion of our supply chain onboarding checks). Day rates will be discussed on application and will reflect experience, competence and availability. The benefits set out below apply to permanent employees. Benefits In addition to working with fantastic colleagues, we offer the following benefits: Time Off & Flexible Working 25 days paid annual leave plus statutory holidays Birthday leave 4PM finish on Fridays Remote and flexible working, with time in our London hub (Farringdon) when the team needs it Health & Wellbeing Comprehensive medical and dental insurance 5% pension contribution Culture & Community Weekly afternoon tea/pastries and monthly pizza days Regular team events and socials Coffee machines and fruit bowls in office Career Development Learning and development fund Support towards professional membership and chartership Performance-related bonus Additional Perks Electric vehicle scheme Referral bonus scheme Perkbox benefits & rewards Work Location This role is remote, combining site-based surveying, working from home and time in our London hub in Farringdon. The balance will flex with the demands of live instructions: some weeks will be heavily site-based, others largely desk-based for reporting and review. Travel to client sites is a core part of the role and business travel and expenses are covered. Where the team is collaborating, checking work together or meeting clients, we come together in Farringdon. We prioritise diversity and inclusion and are proud to hold a Diversity Mark accreditation, recognising the importance of representing our diverse customer base. We strive to attract the best talent and create an environment that supports and includes all individuals. Interview Process Our goal is to keep the interview process fairly simple to keep you engaged, but thorough enough to help us each understand if we’re a good fit for each other. This is what the process will look like for this role: Step 1: 15-min initial meeting with the HR Manager to discuss your background and experience, so that we can understand if your skills and expertise match what we’re looking for. Step 2: 60-min in-person meeting with the Fire Risk Management Director and a member of our Senior leadership team. This may include a short practical exercise, a case study, or a discussion of a redacted survey report you have authored. Throughout the process we’ll give you insights into Axion and Riskhub, our current product suite and vision for the future. We welcome any questions as we want to make sure you’re joining a team and company you’ll be excited to be part of. If you’d like to, we’ll also be able to arrange for you to meet more people from the team. How to Apply If you can demonstrate the skills and experience outlined above, we'd love to hear from you. Please get in touch with your CV for an informal, confidential conversation. Equally, if you know someone who would be perfect for this role, please pass it on or put them in touch. The best people usually come through trusted recommendations.
