As a part of Magnet Forensics, you can expect to make a difference in the world, no matter what role you play. You’ll be supported through learning and development, not to mention an incredible team with unbelievable talent and integrity.
If you think you would be the right person to join our team working towards this goal, we would love to hear from you!

Overview
The AppLogic Team builds core software for the Graykey platform, which Law Enforcement and Government Agencies use to extract data from mobile devices. The AppLogic UI is where examiners do that work.

We're a small, senior, hands-on team, and this role leads frontend for it. You'll work alongside our UX Design Team, turn their work into an interface that's fast, reliable, and easy to build on, and set the structure and conventions the rest of the team follows.

The UI is a mature, server-rendered application built with plain JavaScript and Jinja templates, with CI/CD and unit tests in place. Examiners use it every day, so the job is steady improvement in place: better structure, better performance, and better data, one change at a time. If you're looking to start fresh on a new framework, this probably isn't the right fit.

NOTE: Candidate must reside in Canada.

What You'll Do

  • Own the architecture of the AppLogic web UI and evolve it incrementally while it stays in daily use.
  • Set frontend conventions for the team (structure, naming, testing, review) and raise the bar through code review and pairing.
  • Keep the UI fast and responsive as the product grows.
  • Own product analytics instrumentation so the data is consistent and useful to product management.
  • Work with UX design to turn designs into production UI, and with product and engineering teams across the company.
  • Treat frontend security as part of the job.
  • What We're Looking For

Frontend depth. This is the core of the role:

  • Strong JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, and comfortable building without a framework. That means a real understanding of the browser itself: the DOM, the event loop, rendering, and the network
  • Experience improving a mature production frontend incrementally, without stopping to rewrite it
  • Frontend architecture: state management, component design, and module boundaries
  • Performance work: profiling load time and runtime behavior, and fixing what you find
  • Frontend testing at the unit, integration, and end-to-end levels, with good judgment about which tests are worth writing
  • Real-time UI patterns such as WebSockets or server-sent events
  • Web security fundamentals, including XSS prevention and safe handling of untrusted input
  • Python. The templates live in our Python application, so you'll be in Python code regularly. You should be comfortable reading, changing, and testing production Python, including Jinja (or similar) templates and the endpoints the UI depends on.

Instrumentation. You've designed product analytics event schemas that product managers could use, and you understand what the frontend has to get right for that data to be trustworthy.

Constrained environments. Our software runs on custom hardware installed on-premises at customer sites, often on locked-down networks. The UI can't count on a fast or open internet connection, so you should be comfortable building for that: keeping pages light, not depending on outside resources to load or work, and handling slow or missing connections gracefully.

    General

  • 6+ years of professional engineering experience, most of it on production web frontends.
  • A track record of setting frontend direction for a team: choosing patterns, writing them down, and getting others to adopt them.
  • Experience working directly with product managers on scope, priorities, and trade-offs.
  • Strong with git and code review.
  • Clear written communication, since you'll be explaining frontend decisions to engineers who don't specialize in frontend.
  • Nice To Have

  • Experience building or maintaining a component library or design system alongside product designers.
  • Background in digital forensics, law enforcement, or security tooling.
  • Compensation & Benefits

The Compensation range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. Please note that the actual compensation may vary depending on location and job-related factors such as qualifications, experience, knowledge and skills. If you are applying for this role outside of the primary location and you are selected for an interview, the Talent Acquisition Partner can share more information with you. If the compensation structure for the role includes an incentive component (i.e. most Sales roles) the range below represents total target compensation (TTC) (base salary + variable).

    $103,000 - $153,000 CDN a year

    Indicators of Success
We’re looking for someone who checks off most, but not all, of the boxes listed in “skills and experiences”. It’s more important to us to find candidates who can display indicators of success through skills they have developed and experiences they have been a part of, than to find folks who have “been there, done that”. We want to be part of your development journey, and we’ll learn as much from you as you learn from us.
    How We Work
At Magnet Forensics, we take a hybrid-flexible approach to support your productivity and work-life balance. If you’re within a comfortable travel distance to one of our offices, you’ll occasionally join us in person. How often you’ll come in depends on your department and team needs, typically ranging from weekly to monthly. These in-person moments help us build stronger connections, spark new ideas, and celebrate our successes together. Most days, you can choose what works best for you, while staying in tune with your team’s goals.
We’re excited to welcome you to our team and look forward to achieving great things together - both in the office and wherever you work best!
