Strengthen our Synthetic Teaching / Syntea AI team in full-time (40 hrs./week) as Senior Frontend Engineer (m/f/d) within Germany or UK remotely or at one of our office locations.
In this role you'll help build the front end of Syntea, IU's own AI-powered learning assistant and a critical part of IU's AI-first strategy. Syntea acts as a personal AI tutor for IU's distance-learning students, now supporting more than 80,000 learners with conversational tutoring, adaptive learning, study organization, and administrative tools in a single chat-based platform. As a senior frontend engineer, you'll design and build the interfaces students rely on every day.
Your Tasks
Shape the frontend architecture, Build and own our design system: turn Figma designs into a robust, accessible, AI-assisted component library that lets every team ship high-quality UI quickly.
Refactor and evolve the frontend architecture of the Syntea chat experience for maintainability, performance, and scale.
Design and build new AI-driven interaction concepts — conversational avatars and personalized, adaptive interfaces that reshape themselves to each student based on AI analysis of their profile and preferences.
Partner with backend and AI engineers on LLM tool-call integration, wiring the frontend directly into our multi-agent AI stack.
Champion AI-assisted development practices within the team, using AI to accelerate how we design and ship UI.
Your Profile
Several years of professional frontend development experience (5+ years), ideally shipping complex web applications in cross-functional product teams.
Proven experience designing and maintaining a design system and component libraries used across multiple teams.
Solid full-stack sensibility — comfortable working close to the backend and to API/LLM integrations.
Hands-on experience building AI-driven or LLM-powered user experiences, and fluency with AI-assisted development tools. This is central to the role, not a nice-to-have.
A product mindset: you care about how real students experience what you build, and you can navigate ambiguity in a fast-moving environment.
