Role Description The Senior Government Mortgage Underwriter is a full-time remote role responsible for underwriting FHA, VA, USDA, and other government-backed mortgage loans in accordance with investor, agency, and company guidelines. This role reviews loan applications, credit reports, income documentation, assets, collateral, and supporting information to determine creditworthiness and compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. The underwriter issues timely and accurate conditional approvals, suspensions, and denials, clearly communicating requirements to loan officers, processors, and other stakeholders. Day-to-day tasks include analyzing complex borrower profiles, performing risk assessments, validating documentation, and ensuring files meet quality control and audit standards. The Senior Government Mortgage Underwriter also helps refine underwriting policies, mentors less experienced underwriters, and collaborates with management to resolve escalated or nuanced scenarios.

Qualifications

• Strong understanding of government-backed mortgage programs and government relations within the housing finance sector, including FHA, VA, USDA, and related agency guidelines.
• Excellent communication skills to clearly convey underwriting decisions and conditions to loan officers, processors, and other stakeholders.
• Advanced analytical skills to evaluate credit, income, assets, collateral, and risk, with attention to detail and sound judgment.
• Experience working with local government and public sector regulations affecting residential lending and housing programs.
• Several years of recent, hands-on government mortgage underwriting experience at the senior or advanced level.
• Proficiency with loan origination systems and automated underwriting tools, and familiarity with compliance and quality control processes.
• Ability to work independently in a remote environment, manage high-volume pipelines, and meet deadlines without sacrificing accuracy.
• Knowledge of federal and state lending regulations, fair lending practices, and investor requirements.
• Current certifications or designations are required.
• Associate or bachelor’s degree in finance, business, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
