The Controllership team is part of Core Finance & Risk and owns controlled delivery of close and reporting activities across the full ST&S controllership portfolio. The role leads a team of Controllership Leads and Senior Analysts and is accountable for delivery across co-located, business and technology center, and service-provider teams.

The Senior Manager, Controllership is accountable for the accurate, timely and controlled delivery of close, accounting and reporting activities across the full ST&S controllership portfolio, with particular emphasis on derivative accounting for Oil & Gas trading activity. The role sets portfolio-wide controllership strategy, operating model direction and delivery standards, owns end-to-end process performance and provides assurance over financial results, controls and reporting outcomes, including assuring the accuracy of derivative accounting results to the appropriate CFOs. It leads significant accounting and control matters, determines appropriate partner concern and resolution paths for material issues, establishes effective works with technical accounting, Commodity Risk, Commercial Finance, auditors and service providers, and drives standardization, simplification, automation and capability development across the controllership model.

In this role You will:

  • Own end-to-end monthly, quarterly and annual close outcomes across the full portfolio, setting strategic priorities and portfolio-wide standards to ensure complete, accurate and timely financial results, due diligence, reconciliations and reporting.
  • Provide senior oversight and decision authority for complex controllership matters, with deep accountability for derivative accounting across Oil & Gas trading activity, including management-to-accounting alignment, valuation accounting, intercompany matters, statutory reporting, audit delivery and resolution of material accounting issues where judgement may be required.
  • Be accountable for the effectiveness of the financial control environment across the full portfolio, ensuring ICFR controls are appropriately designed and operated, gaps are assessed and remediated, material risks are called out and CFO confidence in financial results is maintained.
  • Lead controllership readiness for new business activity and major change, ensuring accounting, reporting, data, system and control requirements are understood, tested and sustainably embedded.
  • Lead through Controllership Leads, managers and Senior Analysts, setting priorities and service expectations, allocating capacity across the full portfolio, managing performance and building succession, capability and resilience across the controllership organisation.
  • Set enterprise-level direction for global process standardisation and continuous improvement, sponsoring simplification, automation and technology changes, prioritising investment and ensuring benefits are embedded in day-to-day delivery.

What You will need to be successful:

  • Broad and deep knowledge of financial accounting, period-end close, financial reporting and internal control in a complex trading or supply environment. Strong command of accounting for physical and financial commodity activity, with required experience in derivative accounting for Oil & Gas trading, valuation, management-to-accounting alignment, balance-sheet assurance, intercompany activity, statutory reporting and audit. Able to interpret policy and technical guidance, establish practical standards and ensure consistent application across businesses, processes, systems and locations.
  • Strong understanding of ST&S or a comparable global commodity trading and supply business, including how commercial activity, contracts, systems, market data and operational events affect financial results and risk. Understands the accountabilities of the Front Office, Commodity Risk, Commercial Finance, technical accounting, Core Finance, service providers and external audit, and can shape effective operating boundaries and service expectations across them.
  • Applies broad judgement to complex, high-impact accounting, control, data and process issues, often under significant time pressure and with incomplete or conflicting information. Assesses materiality and risk, challenges assumptions, resolves cross-functional barriers and makes risk-based decisions on remediation, reporting treatment and critical issue where guidance may be incomplete.
  • Accountable for the quality, timeliness and control of financial results and close delivery across the full ST&S controllership portfolio. Decisions and recommendations may affect reported results, CFO assurance, external audit outcomes, statutory or regulatory reporting, control effectiveness and senior management confidence in financial information.
  • Builds trusted relationships with senior Finance, Risk and business partners, technical specialists, auditors and global delivery teams. Communicates complex accounting and control matters clearly, provides authoritative challenge and secures alignment across competing interests.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in accounting, finance or a related rigor.
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant post-degree experience, including at least 7 years of experience leading a team. Extensive experience in controllership, accounting, reporting or financial control, including required experience in derivative accounting for Oil & Gas trading, leadership through managers or technical leads, end-to-end portfolio close delivery, complex accounting matters, controls, senior collaborator engagement and strategic change delivery in a large or complex organisation.
