Job Description: Senior MEP Designer/Engineer I Job Title : Senior MEP Designer/Engineer I Department : Studio C Reports To : Studio Lead Date of Last Review: 8/XX/2025 Job Summary The Senior MEP Designer/Engineer (SDE) plays a critical role in supervising staff in the successful execution of MEP projects and programs which includes projects from other architects. This position involves managing multiple projects and staff members with a firm understanding of building systems and code to ensure the team meets the standard of care on all projects. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership, manage multiple large programs with minimal supervision, and ensure financial success, project quality, consultant relationships, and client satisfaction across all engagements. Roles & Responsibilities Team Collaboration & Mentorship : Qualified and able to train all individuals that report to the Senior MEP Engineer/Designer. Provides daily supervision, support and mentorship to all individuals that report to the Senior MEP Engineer/Designer. Takes a proactive role in mentoring junior staff and participates in firm-wide training initiatives. Assist with staffing forecasts for applicable programs. Performs junior team members quarterly chats and help facilitate annual reviews. Assists with new staff onboarding. Project Leadership: Oversee the coordination and delivery of project documentation, from planning to closeout, ensuring project timelines and quality standards are met. Represents the program as the primary MEP contact and point person for all staff, disciplines, clients, and consultants. Take leadership role in client meetings, presentations, and represent the firm with authority and professionalism. Responsible for allocating in-house resources and coordinating consultant resources (if applicable), planning and implementing task schedule for respective program(s) and projects prior to commencing work, and documenting milestones (both internal and client deadlines) through duration of projects. Comfortable managing multiple projects and out-of-office clients with minimal supervision. Project Execution : Responsible for monitoring the progress of projects and programs to maintain a minimum 90% rating for on-time and on-budget measurables. Monitors project progress using tools such as Ajera and Bloomgrowth and manage KPIs to track performance. Manages construction administration activities, including RFI responses and submittals. Anticipates and mitigates potential issues that may cause delays, scope creep, and budget overruns. Should such issues arise the Senior Engineer/Designer is responsible for working with staff to negotiate adequate schedule increase and additional service fees as necessary. Able to effectively and efficiently delegate work to staff members, ensuring the work gets completed correctly and on time. Engages actively in the preparation of project documentation, which includes, but is not limited to, conducting and documenting building surveys, designing MEP systems, and creating construction documents. Modifies or creates documents and drawings with some guidance applying engineering techniques and utilizing independent judgement. Quality Assurance : Provides milestones and final QC on projects with typical scope. Coordinates with SL to QC complex one-off projects. Initiates and coordinates QA/QC procedures and ensures compliance with building codes, ordinances, and industry standards. Financial Understanding : Responsible for attaining financial success, ensuring the quality of construction documents, adhering to project timelines, and providing exceptional client service for projects and programs. Able to utilize the pricing template to create proposals, determine fees and budgets, and subsequently monitor estimates and actuals. Assumes complete ownership of the assigned proposals and ensure junior staff meets their required measurables. Invoices projects upon completion and coordinates with the accounting team to ensure accuracy. Provides weekly and monthly financial forecasting for programs. Assists the accounting team with collections. Code Competency : Firm grasp of how to apply building codes to projects and ability to review junior staff’s work. Ability to discuss code and permit comments with applicable AHJ reviewers. Administrative Tasks : Manage time and Expense approval/scheduling/phasing/budgets/invoicing in Ajera in a timely manner. Ajera: approval of timesheets & expense reports, adding estimated/actual completion dates, logging % complete throughout projects, fully billing/invoicing projects, TDLR Widget verification, monitoring/understanding KPI Widgets, project closeout. Assist Studio Lead in tracking scorecard measurable for applicable programs throughout the week. Bloomgrowth: logging data from KPI Widgets into scorecard measurables. Skills & Abilities Strong organizational and communication skills, both verbal and written. Proficiency in software such as Revit, AutoCAD, Ajera, and Microsoft Office. Firm understanding and ability to train in MEP building systems and building codes. Ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously. Ability to manage multiple staff members simultaneously. Ability to manage projects, situations, and people with a diplomatic and collaborative leadership style. Effective problem-solving skills. Accountability and motivation. Stress management and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment Firm grasp of QA/QC process and ability to QC for junior staff. Highly knowledgeable on Building Codes and ability to research and apply/incorporate into documents in all phases. Self- motivated and demonstrates the ability to take initiative and function with minimal supervision. Demonstrate proficiency in procedures for production of MEP construction and documents and an understanding of construction. Work Environment Primarily hybrid with occasional site visits. Standard office conditions with typical noise levels. May involve occasional exposure to construction site environments. Physical Demands Regularly required to sit, stand, and walk. May involve occasional local and out of state travel to perform surveys in various conditions. Position Type and Expected Hours of Work Full-time position. Hybrid, two days remote, three in-office. Typical office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM with some flexibility, as approved by supervisor(s). Travel Travel may be required as needed. Education and Experience Accredited degree in Engineering or related field (Preferred) Typically, 6-9 years of successful experience designing MEP building systems and managing multiple projects. Proficiency in relevant engineering and CAD software. Proficiency with Energy Compliance Checks Experience in architectural building systems and construction documentation.
