Our organization

The Alberta Securities Commission (ASC) is the industry-funded regulator responsible for administering the province's securities laws. It is entrusted with fostering a fair and efficient capital market in Alberta and with protecting investors. As a member of the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA), the ASC works to improve, coordinate and harmonize the regulation of Canada's capital markets.

The Information Technology (IT) team is responsible for making sure that the ASC has the appropriate resources necessary to ensure the consistent, reliable and secure delivery of services, and understanding and anticipating the organization’s unique technology requirements.

The opportunity

Reporting to the Manager, Infrastructure and Operations, the Senior Network and Systems Administrator provides senior-level expertise in the design, operation, security, and ongoing improvement of the ASC’s enterprise network and systems infrastructure. This role supports secure and resilient connectivity across the ASC’s office, dual data centres, and Azure environment, while administering the broader on-premises and cloud platforms that underpin reliable IT services. As the ASC continues to modernize its technology environment, this position will play a key role in strengthening operational resilience, resolving complex technical issues, and supporting the transition to cloud-based services without compromising stability, security, or performance.

Key responsibilities include

  • Providing senior-level design, build, configuration, and operational support for the ASC’s enterprise network infrastructure, including Cisco switching and routing, wireless networking, Fortinet firewalls, VPN access, load balancing, and network segmentation to enable secure and reliable connectivity across the organization.
  • Managing secure and resilient connectivity across the ASC’s dual data centres, office location, and Azure environment, including hybrid connectivity, virtual networks, routing, network security controls, high availability, and inter-site connectivity that support business continuity and operational resilience.
  • Administering, monitoring, and optimizing Fortinet firewall platforms and Cisco switching infrastructure, including firewall policies, security rules, VPN services, VLANs, trunks, spanning tree, port security, redundancy, lifecycle support, and performance tuning.
  • Administering and troubleshooting Azure Firewall, VPN Gateway, and other core Azure networking components that support the ASC’s cloud and hybrid environment.
  • Monitoring network performance, capacity, resiliency, and availability; using operational data and technical judgement to identify risks, diagnose issues, and recommend preventative and remedial action.
  • Maintaining network standards, architecture and configuration diagrams, operational runbooks, procedures, and knowledge base articles to support consistent operations and effective troubleshooting.
  • Administering, troubleshooting, and supporting enterprise infrastructure across the ASC’s systems environment, including Cisco HyperFlex and Nutanix virtualized platforms, Windows Server, storage, backup, SQL Server, and Azure services, ensuring these platforms remain patched, secured, monitored, available, and aligned with operational standards and cybersecurity best practices.
  • Developing and maintaining scripts and automation, using PowerShell, Bash, and related technologies to streamline recurring tasks.
  • Acting as the senior escalation point for complex infrastructure, application, integration, network, and cloud service issues; working closely with the Service Desk, security and development teams, vendors, and other stakeholders; and providing technical leadership, mentoring, and knowledge transfer to other IT teammates.

The ideal candidate will possess

  • A degree or diploma in computing or a related field from a recognized post-secondary institution, or an equivalent combination of relevant certification and experience.
  • A minimum of seven years of experience designing, implementing, and supporting enterprise networks in a comparable environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of enterprise network design, implementation, and support, with hands-on experience in Cisco switching, routing, wireless, Fortinet FortiGate firewalls, VPN, DNS, DHCP, network segmentation and monitoring, and resilient connectivity between dual data centres.
  • Strong knowledge of Azure networking and hybrid connectivity, including Azure Firewall, VPN Gateway, VNets, routing, network security groups, private connectivity, monitoring and governance services, and connectivity between Azure and on-premises data centres.
  • Extensive experience with virtualized Windows Server environments and the integration of Microsoft Entra ID with Active Directory.
  • Experience with PowerShell, Azure DevOps, Terraform, Bicep, or other automation tools.

Additionally, these would be assets:

  • Experience with Nutanix AHV.
  • Experience with SQL Server administration and query tools, backup and recovery platforms, and enterprise monitoring tools.
  • Experience with Microsoft Purview.
  • Experience with Veeam or comparable enterprise backup and recovery platforms.
