Company Description

Depop is a peer-to-peer circular fashion marketplace where anyone can buy, sell and discover secondhand fashion. Our mission is simple: to make fashion circular by making secondhand as exciting and rewarding as buying new.

Founded in 2011, Depop’s diverse community has helped move resale into the mainstream, where buying secondhand is no longer an alternative, but how people of different ages now engage with fashion. Today, more than 56 million registered users come to Depop to find great value, express their own personal style and give clothes a longer life. We believe that everything you want already exists, and our role is to help people discover it.

Powered by a team of over 500 people, our company is headquartered in London, with offices in New York. In 2021, Depop became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Etsy - the global marketplace for unique and creative goods - and continues to operate as a standalone company. For more information, visit www.depop.com

We aim to create an inclusive environment where everyone is welcome, no matter who they are or where they’re from. Just as our platform connects people globally, we believe our workplace should reflect the diversity of the communities we serve. We thrive on the power of different perspectives and experiences, knowing they drive innovation and bring us closer to our users.

We’re proud to be an equal opportunity employer, providing employment opportunities without regard to age, ethnicity, religion or belief, gender identity, sex, sexual orientation, disability, pregnancy or maternity, marriage and civil partnership, or any other protected status. We’re continuously evolving our recruitment processes to ensure fairness and are open to accommodating any needs you might have.

AI Disclosure: We use AI tools (Google Gemini) to help our team source and review applications for roles with a high volume of applications. These tools assist our recruiters in identifying great talent but do not replace human decision-making. At Depop, every hiring decision is made by a human.

We're looking for a Senior Product Data Scientist to join our Insights team and support our Shipping teams. You'll partner closely with product, operations, engineering and machine learning to deliver insights, drive experimentation and shape how every item moves from seller to buyer.

This role sits at the intersection of technical excellence and strategic impact. You'll dive deep into data, pipelines and experimentation frameworks while shaping shipping strategy, product direction and commercial outcomes.

What You’ll Do

Lead analytics and technical discovery for Shipping

Be the go-to senior data scientist for the Shipping teams. You'll build a deep understanding of buyer and seller behaviour, carrier and label economics, and the end-to-end delivery experience. You'll partner with product, operations, engineering and ML on ambiguous problems where the path forward is unclear. You'll find opportunities for analysis on your own, develop new approaches where existing methods fall short, and produce insights that directly shape the shipping roadmap.

Influence product and business strategy

Shipping is full of big, open-ended problems. You'll pin down the right question and turn the answer into a decision the team can act on. You'll connect user behaviour, marketplace dynamics and shipping unit economics to commercial outcomes, and influence prioritisation at both team and company level as a thought partner. You'll challenge assumptions and raise the quality of decision making.

Design and run experiments

Define hypotheses, implement A/B tests and rigorously evaluate impact, with deep dives into customer behaviour that inform rollout decisions and future product development. Where a clean A/B test isn't possible, such as pricing or carrier changes that roll out by region, choose and defend the right alternative design.

Work with other teams to enable self-serve, data-driven decision making

Collaborate with product, platform and data teams to ensure scalable, accurate datasets for shipping analysis. Develop dashboards and reporting that drive awareness and actionable insights.

What we're looking for

  • Strong SQL skills and experience querying large, complex datasets
  • Proficiency in Python, with experience in advanced analytics techniques such as causal inference, forecasting or cost modelling
  • A strategic thinker, comfortable structuring a nebulous problem and working it through to a clear recommendation
  • Familiarity with ETL workflows and debugging data issues
  • Proven experience designing and interpreting experiments, including when clean randomisation isn't possible
  • Hands-on experience with visualisation tools (Looker, Tableau or similar)
  • Excellent communication skills, able to explain complex topics clearly and persuasively
  • Commercial mindset with the ability to balance user and business needs
  • Strong sense of ownership, highly organised and proactive
  • Comfortable working across ambiguity and fast-changing environments

Bonus points

  • Experience in C2C marketplaces or mobile-first consumer products
  • Experience in shipping, logistics or marketplace unit economics
  • Experience working alongside machine learning teams, analysing model outputs or supporting ML evaluation workflows
