Senior Product Engineer

We are hiring a Senior Product Engineer for a client in the UK that helps businesses understand changing policies and regulations, what those changes mean for them, and where they need to act.

They started in climate policy and have expanded into the wider regulatory landscape. Their platform

brings together policy and regulatory information with AI-powered research and analysis, helping

businesses find relevant information, understand its implications, and make better decisions. Their

wider goal will be to provide the verification layer for all consumers who work with legislation.

For our engineering team, that means solving an interesting problem: turning large amounts of

complex, changing information into something people can use and trust.

The opportunity

We’re looking for a senior engineer who wants to get stuck into building a product across AI, data and

full-stack engineering.

You’ll join a close-knit engineering team, working closely with the product team to turn customer

needs into working features, expand our data offering, and keep the platform running reliably.

This is a broad, hands-on role. You might work on a data pipeline, build a backend service, investigate

a production issue, improve an AI workflow, or take a feature through to the frontend.

You’ll get to understand how the whole product works rather than only the part assigned to you.

We’re looking for someone who can take substantial ownership. You should be comfortable taking a

loosely defined problem, working out a practical solution, making sensible technical decisions and

taking work through to production.

You don’t need to arrive as an expert across the entire stack. You do need strong software

engineering foundations, good technical judgement, and the ability to become productive quickly in

unfamiliar areas.

What you’ll work on

• Turn product needs into functionality. Work with the product team to understand problems, shape

practical solutions, and take features from an initial idea through development, testing, release

and improvement.

• Build across the stack. Develop our Python backend and SQL-based data systems, connect services

through APIs, and contribute to our TypeScript frontend.

• Expand our data offering. Bring in new data sources, build and maintain processing pipelines, and

improve the quality, coverage and freshness of the information behind our product.

• Develop useful AI features. Work on the retrieval, analysis and workflows that help customers make

sense of policy and regulation. Test what works, investigate what doesn’t, and improve quality,

speed, reliability and cost.

• Improve how we build. Contribute to technical decisions, identify worthwhile technical debt, and

improve our approaches to testing, monitoring, architecture and deployment.

• Keep the platform dependable. Troubleshoot production issues, maintain existing systems, and

improve the reliability of what we’ve already shipped. Building new functionality and looking after

existing functionality are both part of the job.

What you’ll bring

We’re looking for someone who has already built and maintained software used by real users and is

comfortable taking meaningful ownership of production systems.

You should have:

• Strong practical Python and SQL skills. You’re comfortable writing and debugging Python, querying

relational databases, working with existing data models and understanding how data moves

through a system.

• Experience owning production software. You’ve taken work through development, testing and

deployment, and understand that maintaining software after release is part of the job.

• A strong understanding of the software development lifecycle. APIs, Git and GitHub, pull requests,

code reviews, testing and CI/CD should all be familiar territory.

• Good technical judgement. You can make sensible trade-offs between speed, simplicity,

maintainability and reliability.

• Strong problem-solving and debugging skills. You can investigate unfamiliar behaviour, work

systematically through a problem and get to the root cause.

• The ability to work independently. You can break down an ambiguous problem, make progress

without every step being defined for you, and recognise when something needs wider discussion.

• Clear communication. You can explain your thinking, discuss technical decisions and work closely

with both engineers and non-engineers.

• An interest in working across the product. You may have areas where you are particularly strong,

but you are comfortable moving between data, backend, frontend and AI when the problem

requires it.

Particularly useful, but not essential

• Startup or scale-up experience is a strong advantage. This is a small, fast-moving team where
• engineers have broad responsibilities and there is not a specialist team available for every problem.
• TypeScript experience is also a strong advantage, as it powers our frontend. Without it, you should be keen to learn and willing to work on user-facing features.
• Modern AI-assisted development makes moving between technologies easier than it used to be. We care more about whether you understand how software is put together than the specific language you have spent the most time using.
• A background in data engineering, data-intensive applications, ETL pipelines, search or cloud infrastructure would also be useful.
• Experience with LLM APIs, retrieval, embeddings, agents or AI evaluation is welcome, but we’re not expecting you to arrive as an AI specialist.
• We care more about what you’ve built, how you approach problems, and the level of ownership you’ve had than a particular degree or an exact number of years on your CV.
• You don’t need previous experience in policy or regulation.
• A small team with room to grow
• You’ll work directly with our existing Lead Engineer and closely with our product team.
• You’ll contribute to technical decisions, review each other’s work, and share responsibility for keeping the platform running and moving it forward.
• Because the engineering team is small, you’ll have significant ownership and your decisions will have a visible impact on both the product and the way we work.
• We’re looking for someone who can bring their own experience and ideas to the team, while still being
• comfortable collaborating, challenging assumptions and learning when something is unfamiliar.

Working hours and flexibility

• This role is remote and based in Kenya.
• You’ll work closely with colleagues in the UK, so you should be comfortable collaborating remotely and maintaining good overlap with the London working day. Meeting times will generally happen within the standard working day although we may occasionally flex outside them for customer facing calls.
• There’s no routine requirement to work outside normal hours although, as a small, fast-paced startup, there may occasionally be times where we need to put in extra effort to meet an important delivery deadline.
• That should be the exception rather than the normal working pattern.
