Position Overview:

Ameresco is hiring a Senior Project Manager to lead two to three solar PV, distributed generation, community solar, and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects concurrently, depending on project size, phase, and complexity. You will coordinate with Business Development and Preconstruction during project development and turnover, then lead execution from Notice to Proceed through construction, commissioning, commercial operation, and final closeout. The role combines remote project leadership with regular site presence during critical construction, commissioning, and recovery activities and is accountable for safety, schedule, cost, quality, commercial outcomes, and client communication.

This is a hands-on senior project delivery role that combines direct project ownership with cross-functional leadership and mentoring of Project Managers and Assistant Project Managers. This role reports to the Senior Director of Construction – Solar PV & BESS with a preference for candidates located in the Greater Boston area with the ability to work from the Boston office periodically based on business and team needs. Remote U.S. candidates may be considered for the right fit and will be expected to travel to the Boston office quarterly.

Responsibilities:

  • Partner with Business Development and Preconstruction to review contract requirements, estimate assumptions, baseline schedules, procurement, permitting, interconnection, constructability, site logistics, staffing, and subcontractor strategy, then convert the sold project into an executable plan with clear scope, budget, schedule, risk ownership, and decision paths before mobilization.
  • Lead assigned solar PV, distributed generation, community solar, and BESS projects from Notice to Proceed through commercial operation and final closeout.
  • Manage procurement and subcontractor performance, including scope alignment, commitments, deliverables, schedule compliance, field coordination, and issue resolution.
  • Direct cross-functional project teams that include Construction Managers, Superintendents, Engineering, Procurement, Safety, Quality, project controls, subcontractors, OEMs, and support staff.
  • Manage project budgets, forecasts, contingency, cash flow, and margin, and drive value-engineering opportunities with Engineering and Procurement.
  • Lead project-level change-order development, negotiation, claims support, schedule recovery, and management of liquidated-damages exposure; escalate material commercial and contractual risks to Commercial, Legal, and senior leadership.
  • Maintain the baseline schedule, evaluate critical-path impacts, develop recovery plans, and hold internal teams and contractors accountable for commitments.
  • Serve as the primary day-to-day client contact, coordinate with utilities and developers, communicate decisions and risks clearly, and resolve or escalate issues before they affect project outcomes.
  • Coordinate testing, commissioning, energization, turnover, and applicable BESS, electrical, fire-code, permitting, prevailing-wage, apprenticeship, and certified-payroll requirements with the responsible internal teams, OEMs, consultants, utilities, and authorities having jurisdiction.
  • Drive commercial operation and final closeout, including punch-list completion, documentation, training, warranties, final account reconciliation, and resolution of remaining exposure.
  • Provide accurate, decision-ready project reporting to the Senior Director of Construction, including safety, cost, schedule, procurement, quality, commercial exposure, key decisions, and required support.
  • Mentor Project Managers and Assistant Project Managers, reinforce consistent project controls, and share practical lessons learned across the construction team.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant construction experience.
  • Minimum of 10 years of construction project management experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years supporting solar PV, BESS, distributed generation, community solar, or related power infrastructure projects.
  • Experience managing projects valued from $5M to $150M+.
  • Strong command of EPC/EPCM delivery, subcontract management, and construction execution.
  • Proven commercial skills: change-order negotiation, claims management, and cost forecasting.
  • Experience leading or mentoring project managers.
  • Proven ability to manage projects, teams, and contractors remotely, with strong written communication.
  • Willingness to travel 20–30% to assigned project sites; valid driver's license required.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Direct utility-scale solar construction experience, including project execution through commissioning and closeout.
  • Utility-scale BESS construction and commissioning experience, including OEM coordination and energization.
  • Working knowledge of NFPA 855, UL 9540/9540A, NFPA 70E, and NEC, with AHJ/fire-department permitting experience.
  • Experience with applicable IRA prevailing-wage and apprenticeship requirements, including certified-payroll documentation.
  • Utility interconnection experience (e.g., ISO-NE, PJM, MISO).
  • PMP and/or PE; OSHA 30; NABCEP a plus.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Project, Procore, and other construction management software.
