Are you passionate about advancing sequencing technologies and transforming complex biological data into actionable scientific insights? Join Molecular Analytics, part of Advanced Analytics & Omics within Microbe & Culture Research R&D, where we develop cutting-edge scientific capabilities that enable innovation in microbial products.

As our new Senior Research Scientist, you will play a key role in strengthening sequencing capabilities, digital scientific workflows, and AI readiness across Novonesis. Working alongside laboratory technicians, scientists, bioinformaticians, automation specialists, and data scientists, you will help bridge laboratory science, data innovation, and technology development to accelerate microbial research and product development.

We are a collaborative team of 14 dedicated scientists and laboratory technicians who value scientific curiosity, knowledge sharing, psychological safety, and a shared commitment to turning complex scientific questions into practical solutions.

The role & your impact

This is a multidisciplinary role combining hands-on scientific execution, technologyinnovation, data interpretation, and cross-functional collaboration. You will have operational and tactical impact while contributing to longer-term scientific and digital capabilities that support innovation across R&D.

Your key responsibilities in this role

  • Design, execute, troubleshoot, interpret, and document molecular biology and sequencing experiments.
  • Work hands-on in the laboratory, supporting and mentoring laboratory technicians and ensuring workflows are scientifically robust, scalable, traceable, and automation-ready.
  • Contribute to scientific innovation, intellectual property generation, stakeholder communication, and departmental priorities through leadership roles such as Service/queue management, workstream lead and backlog representative.
  • Drive and further develop Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT)-based sequencing capabilities and workflows supporting microbial research and product development.
  • Lead the development of strategic scientific data resources, structured data flows, and digital workflows across Benchling and LIMS platforms.
  • Ensure high-quality data capture that supports FAIR data principles, downstream reuse, and AI-ready datasets.

What you’ll need to be successful in this role

  • Ph.D. in molecular biology, microbiology, biotechnology, genomics, bioinformatics, or a related life science discipline.
  • Significant experience from industrial R&D or a comparable scientific research environment.
  • Demonstrated expertise with Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) and next-generation sequencing workflows.
  • Strong molecular biology knowledge and hands-on laboratory experience.
  • Ability to connect laboratory methods, sequencing technologies, data flows and downstream use of data, and to develop scalable scientific workflows that support traceability, FAIR data principles and AI-ready datasets..
  • Experience applying AI- or machine-learning-enabled approaches within molecular analytics or scientific workflows.
  • Automation mindset with experience optimizing laboratory workflows through automation, scripting and digital solutions.
  • Practical bioinformatics and data analysis capabilities enabling foundational analyses and effective collaboration with bioinformatics specialists.
  • Professional proficiency in English.

Essential competencies

  • Curiosity, innovation, and value creation mindset.
  • Strong collaboration, influence, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ownership and accountability for delivering high-quality scientific outcomes.
  • Embrace Novonesis Culture Commitments, inclusion, and Safety-First principles.

Additional skills & interests we value

The following qualifications are considered advantageous but are not required:

  • Experience with single-cell genomics or transcriptomics.
  • Multi-omics integration, including genomic, metagenomic, transcriptomic, and related datasets.
  • Experience in microbial discovery, strain characterization, or bioprospecting.
  • Knowledge of bacterial transcriptomics and transcriptomic data interpretation.
  • Experience working across multiple sequencing platforms, including short-read technologies.

What we offer you

At Novonesis, you will join a highly skilled and collaborative scientific environment where innovation, learning, and knowledge sharing are part of everyday work. In this role, you will have the opportunity to shape the future of sequencing technologies and scientific data innovation while playing a key role in advancing molecular analytics capabilities across R&D. You will work closely with experts across molecular biology, bioinformatics, automation, and data science, giving you a unique platform to expand your scientific expertise and influence the development of new capabilities.

We offer an environment that supports professional growth, encourages technology leadership, and values scientific impact. You will become part of an inclusive culture built on trust, psychological safety, and continuous learning, where curiosity and collaboration are encouraged. Most importantly, your work will contribute to developing biosolutions that help address some of the world's most pressing challenges
