  • Temporary full-time (35 hours per week) opportunity up to 30 June 2029
  • Office location - Parramatta or key Science & Insights regional locations. Hybrid working supported
  • Salary relative to experience, and ranges from $128,052 to $142,649 pa + super


Our Ecological Modelling and Knowledge Team is seeking to appoint a Senior Scientist, Quantitative Ecology to develop innovative ecological models and analytical approaches that inform biodiversity conservation and environmental decision-making across NSW. This is a unique opportunity to apply your advanced quantitative ecology skills to high-profile science programs that shape the future management and protection of the state's natural environment.

In this role, you will influence threatened species and biodiversity science and contribute to complex monitoring and modelling projects that support evidence-based policy, conservation and land management decisions. Working within the Conservation and Restoration Science Branch, you will collaborate with scientists, universities, government agencies and research partners to deliver innovative scientific solutions and provide expert advice on biodiversity trends, conservation priorities and ecological outcomes.

About You
You will bring:

  • Demonstrated experience delivering scientifically rigorous ecological research and applied science projects.
  • Proficiency in quantitative methods, such as hierarchical abundance and occupancy modelling, Bayesian ecological inference, population viability assessment, species distribution and habitat suitability modelling, community ecology, and threatened species monitoring design and optimisation.
  • Experience working with large environmental datasets and developing innovative analytical approaches to support biodiversity conservation.
  • A proven ability to deliver a range of scientific knowledge products, from customer-focused scientific outputs that inform policy, conservation and management decisions through to producing international-quality applied ecological research applications and publications.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to translate complex scientific concepts into clear and practical advice.
  • Ability to build productive relationships across research, policy and operational environments.

Essential Requirement

  • Relevant science degree qualification.

About the Team - Science & Insights
Science & Insights sits within the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW), which works to protect the state’s environment and heritage while driving a sustainable future for NSW.

Working at the intersection of science, policy and delivery, Science & Insights collaborates across government, academia, industry and communities to identify priority issues and deliver practical, high-impact solutions.

The division brings together six specialist branches spanning conservation and restoration, climate and atmospheric science, environmental protection, remote sensing and landscape science, science impact and assessment, and water, wetlands and coastal science.

Together, these teams provide the evidence, expertise and insights needed to understand NSW’s environment, manage risks and drive sustainable outcomes.

The division’s work is focused on building a strong evidence base, advancing innovation in how data is gathered and used, and translating complex scientific information into clear, actionable insights and advice. Through scientific rigour, partnerships and knowledge sharing, Science & Insights plays a critical role in protecting, restoring and strengthening the resilience of NSW’s environment for future generations.
