This is a hands-on engineering role with CI/CD and software delivery engineering at its core . You will evaluate our existing build and deployment ecosystem, identify bottlenecks and opportunities for improvement, and engineer solutions that make software delivery faster, more reliable, more standardized, easier to troubleshoot, and safer for development teams . You will work extensively with our Jenkins-based CI/CD platform, Groovy shared libraries, GitHub workflows, AWS environments, infrastructure as code, automated testing, code-quality tooling, and deployment automation . We are looking for someone who can do more than maintain pipelines—you should be able to understand how our current delivery process works, challenge what can be improved, and build reusable, maintainable solutions that move our CI/CD capabilities forward. You should be comfortable developing across the entire software delivery lifecycle from code commit through build, test, artifact creation, deployment, validation, and rollback , while partnering closely with Software Engineering and QA teams. You should also be a strong communicator who collaborates well in a distributed environment and is comfortable partnering across engineering, QA, SRE, security, support, and product teams. We value people who are practical, curious, accountable, and motivated by continuous improvement. Our environment includes AWS, Jenkins, Groovy, CloudFormation, ECS/Fargate, GitHub, Jira, SonarQube, Splunk, New Relic, Cortex.io, Slack, Snowflake, Databricks , and other modern engineering tools and platforms. Location is flexible! This role can work from our St. John's, NL office on the water, or remotely within Alberta, Newfoundland & Labrador, Nova Scotia, or Ontario. Candidates must already be residing in Canada. No visa sponsorship is available. What Your Day Will Look Like DevOps, CI/CD and Developer Enablement Design, develop, and improve Jenkins shared libraries, Jenkins files, and CI/CD pipelines using Groovy Assess and optimize build, test, release, and deployment workflows for speed, reliability, scalability, and developer experience Create reusable pipeline components and standardized delivery patterns that reduce duplication, manual effort, and operational risk Develop and apply software engineering practices including source control, code review, automated testing, documentation, and maintainability when developing CI/CD tooling, automation, shared libraries, and reusable components Improve build performance through better pipeline architecture, parallelization, caching, dependency management, and artifact management Strengthen deployments through automated testing, quality gates, validation, health checks, environment promotion, and rollback capabilities Partner with development and QA teams to improve how applications are built, tested, packaged, versioned, and deployed Modernize CI/CD practices and use delivery metrics to identify bottlenecks and measure improvement Lead technical improvements that modernize engineering tools and practices, reduce manual effort and operational risk, and improve developer productivity and deployment confidence Support Carnegie Learning's evolution toward platform engineering and developer self-service, leveraging Cortex.io to improve service ownership, standards, and engineering insights DevOps and Cloud Engineering Build and manage secure, scalable AWS infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code, primarily CloudFormation Support containerized application deployments using Docker and AWS ECS/Fargate Develop code, scripts, tools, APIs, and reusable components that automate engineering and operational workflows Troubleshoot complex issues across application code, builds, CI/CD pipelines, cloud infrastructure, networking, and configuration Identify root causes and implement sustainable solutions rather than short-term workarounds Modernize legacy tooling and processes where it improves software delivery, reliability, or developer productivity Deployment and Operational Readiness Use Splunk, New Relic, and AWS CloudWatch to validate deployments and troubleshoot application, infrastructure, and pipeline issues Improve deployment monitoring, alerting, rollback, and post-deployment validation Participate in incident response and root cause analysis when build, release, deployment, or infrastructure issues contribute to production problems Support production reliability through performance monitoring, capacity awareness, and improvements related to software delivery and infrastructure Turn recurring delivery and operational issues into automated, corrective, or preventative improvements Collaboration and Ownership Lead CI/CD and DevOps improvements across engineering teams Partner closely with Software Engineering, QA, SRE, Security, and Architecture Provide technical guidance, share knowledge, and help teams adopt effective CI/CD, DevOps, cloud, and software delivery practices Influence technical decisions and engineering standards across teams through practical recommendations, reusable patterns, and hands-on implementation Establish clear standards, documentation, reusable examples, and operational runbooks Take ownership of complex technical problems from investigation through implementation and validation Contribute to a culture of teamwork, accountability, continuous improvement, and customer focus On-call on a monthly rotating basis; after-hours work is limited but occasionally required. What Should Be In Your Bookbag You bring 7+ years of experience in DevOps, CI/CD engineering, software engineering, platform engineering, or cloud engineering , along with strong communication skills and the ability to independently solve complex technical problems. Must be highly experienced in: Jenkins, Groovy, and CI/CD engineering — including Jenkins files, shared libraries, reusable pipeline components, build agents, and pipeline troubleshooting Software delivery engineering — including build systems, automated testing, artifact management, versioning, deployment, validation, rollback, and improving delivery speed and reliability Needs solid experience in: AWS and Infrastructure as Code — particularly CloudFormation or Terraform Containers and cloud-native deployments — including Docker and platforms such as AWS ECS/Fargate Git/GitHub and troubleshooting across application code, builds, CI/CD pipelines, cloud infrastructure, networking, configuration, and deployment environments Helpful or preferred: Experience with observability and deployment-validation platforms, GitHub Actions, code-quality and DevSecOps tooling, platform engineering/developer self-service, DORA or engineering productivity metrics, and database troubleshooting What Gives Us Purpose Others teach what; we teach why.
