The company
A small but profitable, VC-backed ClimateTech startup using AI to automate carbon measurement across the food industry.
Their platform is used by 100+ organisations including major restaurant groups, 25+ UK universities and global brands. Both founders are Cambridge graduates and Forbes 30 Under 30.
You'll work directly with an Oxford-trained Head of Software who previously went from first technical hire to CTO at a seed-stage startup.
The Backend Engineer role
You'll own the platform backend. Not one service within it, the backend as a whole.
Customers send millions of messy purchasing records into the platform. AI pipelines categorise, clean and standardise that data before turning it into emissions information businesses can actually use.
Making that reliable at scale is where the interesting engineering starts: distributed queues, autoscaling workers, concurrency and idempotency, validation and self-correction around LLM outputs, human review for low-confidence results, retries and rate limits.
Python, Django, FastAPI, PostgreSQL, Redis and AWS. No separate platform team between your code and production.
The goal in your first six months is to become the person trusted to own that core system. After that comes turning all that purchasing data into new customer insights and products, most of which hasn't been designed yet.
What they're looking for
Less about years of experience, more about what you've personally owned and shipped.
Strong Python backend fundamentals, Django and FastAPI, and genuinely hands-on AWS. Not just deploying to it, but making the architecture and infrastructure decisions yourself.
They're also AI-forward. Claude and agentic workflows already shape how the team builds, including systems that take tickets through planning into ready-to-review PRs.
You don't need to be an AI engineer, but you should already be exploring how AI changes what you can build and how you build it.
Who this suits
Someone who wants technical ownership rather than management.
You'll stay hands-on in a small team, with broad responsibility and real influence over technical direction.
That can mean designing a new system one day and debugging a failed import the next.
It's high ownership without the expectation of ridiculous startup hours.
