Full Stack Java Developer with Node.js & AWS

Contract: 12 months

Location: Hybrid, with a preference for Newcastle; other locations include London, Leeds, Manchester, Blackpool and Sheffield.

The Role

We are looking for Senior Software Developers to contribute to the design, development and maintenance of citizen-facing digital services. You will work within a multidisciplinary Agile team, building reliable, secure and scalable software while ensuring the operational stability, robustness and resilience of the products you develop.

The role requires full-stack capability across backend services, databases and frontend user interfaces. You will work with cloud-native technologies, APIs, microservices and event-driven architectures, supporting the development of existing and evolving digital services through to production.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and maintain full-stack digital applications using Node.js, Java, Spring Boot and modern frontend frameworks, preferably Angular.
  • Develop secure, scalable cloud-native applications using AWS and/or Azure, including serverless services such as Lambda, API Gateway and SQS.
  • Design and implement REST APIs, microservices and event-driven solutions using Kafka or similar technologies.
  • Develop and maintain frontend components and user journeys, supporting iterative delivery towards MVP and production-ready services.
  • Work with NoSQL databases, including MongoDB or Amazon DocumentDB.
  • Use Terraform for Infrastructure as Code and support containerised applications using Docker, Kubernetes and AWS EKS.
  • Build and maintain automated test suites and contribute to CI/CD pipelines, preferably using GitLab and Jest.
  • Support defect resolution, backlog delivery, production stability and continuous improvement.
  • Apply engineering best practices covering code quality, application security, accessibility, WCAG compliance and performance.
  • Collaborate with DevOps, user-centred design, product and Agile delivery teams to deliver effective digital services.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Strong hands-on full-stack software development experience across backend, databases and frontend applications.
  • Experience with Node.js and JavaScript/TypeScript, backend frameworks such as Express, and Java with Spring Boot.
  • Experience with modern frontend frameworks, preferably Angular.
  • Practical experience with AWS serverless services, including Lambda, API Gateway, SQS, S3, KMS, CloudWatch and X-Ray.
  • Experience designing and developing REST APIs, microservices and event-driven architectures.
  • Experience with NoSQL databases such as MongoDB or Amazon DocumentDB.
  • Knowledge of Terraform and Infrastructure as Code.
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes and preferably AWS EKS.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, preferably GitLab, and automated testing frameworks such as Jest.
  • Strong Agile delivery, communication and multidisciplinary collaboration skills.

Desirable Experience

  • Active or previously held SC clearance, or eligibility for SC clearance.
  • Experience with Kafka and API gateway platforms such as Kong Enterprise.
  • Experience delivering large-scale serverless and event-driven applications.
  • Familiarity with SonarQube and other code quality tools.
  • Experience with public-sector or accessible digital services.
  • Exposure to AI/ML-enabled development, including LLMs, guardrails, validation and testing, and model deployment or maintenance.

Working Arrangements

This is a hybrid contract role requiring a combination of remote working and attendance at designated hubs. Newcastle is the preferred location, with other listed UK locations also considered.
