Senior Software Engineer (JavaScript / RoR)

We are looking for a full-time, remote Staff Software Engineer (RoR) with 8+ years of software engineering experience, including 5+ years building and maintaining production Ruby on Rails applications, to join our U.S. client tight-knit, experienced engineering team. In this role, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams to design, implement, and optimize applications, while contributing to critical Ruby on Rails features, integrations, and engineering best practices.

Responsibilities

• Partner with product managers and cross-functional teams to clarify business needs, resolve ambiguity, and lead complex initiatives involving multiple engineers
• Lead Product Requirements Documents, technical designs, estimates, and delivery plans; break initiatives into achievable milestones and coordinate dependencies
• Design and build critical Ruby on Rails features, data models, and integrations; establish reusable patterns and guide architectural decisions across application areas
• Help lead the engineering approach for user-facing AI agents, including shared tooling, evaluations, automated tests, permissions, monitoring, and failure handling
• Guide consistent interfaces using the design system in Claude Design and existing pages; build and reuse views, components, styles, and accessible interaction patterns
• Set a strong example for quality through hands-on development, automated tests, browser checks, and code reviews; mentor engineers, including Senior engineers, and unblock delivery
• Lead safe deployments and migrations, including sequencing, rollback plans, and validation; follow through on production issues and address recurring causes
• Use AI throughout planning, design, development, review, and release; help the team apply it effectively, protect sensitive information, and verify results. Humans own the finished work
• Identify engineering constraints that affect delivery or operations; build agreement on focused improvements and measure whether they improve reliability, quality, or delivery time

Required Experience

• Excellent English communication and interpersonal skills
• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 5+ years building and maintaining production Ruby on Rails applications, with examples of hands-on delivery and technical leadership
• Deep Ruby and Rails expertise, relational data modeling, SQL, and PostgreSQL or a comparable database, including experience evolving production architecture incrementally
• Experience creating user interfaces with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and a modern frontend approach
• Experience leading complex initiatives across multiple engineers, resolving dependencies, and taking work from an ambiguous brief through a successful release
• Experience integrating APIs and diagnosing reliability, performance, and data issues across the stack, with sound judgment about migration risk and operational cost
• Practical experience using AI tools, reviewing generated code critically, and helping other engineers adopt effective testing and verification practices
• Clear written and verbal communication, with examples of building agreement, mentoring Senior engineers, and adapting a technical proposal in response to feedback.
• An interest in consistent, accessible interfaces and the details that make a workflow understandable and reliable
• Proven delivery experience in a vibrant, dynamic startup environment

Desired Experience

• University degree or relevant industry experience (ideally a technical or engineering degree)
• Experience in healthcare, healthtech industry, or growth-stage startups
• Experience with Stimulus, Turbo, Tailwind CSS, Sidekiq, or Heroku Shield
