Show job description

When a ship goes into dry dock, every day at the yard costs money. The superintendent running the project needs every job, quote and change in one place. When an inspector walks the deck far from shore, the app has to work without a signal. We build the software for both, and we are looking for a senior engineer who wants to own a real part of it.

About UniSea

UniSea is a Norwegian company building an all-in-one software platform for the maritime industry. Our software is used on around 4,000 vessels by shipping companies such as Tidewater, Solstad, Scandlines and BSM Cruise Services. Around 30 developers work from our offices in Skudeneshavn, Bergen and Berlin, and remotely.

What you will work on

You will join the team behind two of our products:

  • Maindeck: planning and running dry-docking and repair projects, from specifications and tendering with shipyards to yard selection and cost follow-up.
  • Inspections: vessel inspections, with a mobile app that works fully offline and syncs when the vessel is back in coverage.

Both products share one Rails web application, and each has its own React Native app for iOS and Android. Your work will include:

  • Taking features from idea to production: clarifying the problem, designing the solution, building, testing, shipping and following up. For the UI, you build on our design system, and we prototype with AI design tools when a feature needs it.
  • Working across backend, web frontend and mobile, wherever the feature needs it.
  • Building AI into the product. We already run our own MCP server and AI-based features, and there is more to do.
  • Improving what already exists: performance, test coverage, code quality and how we work.
  • Reviewing code and sharing what you know with the team.

Who we are looking for

How you work matters more to us than a perfect match on our stack.

  • You lean in. When you see something that needs doing, you do it or you raise it.
  • You ask the right questions, then drive. When something is unclear, you get the clarification you need early. Then you move the work forward yourself, without anyone having to chase you.
  • You own the outcome. Done means shipped, working and used, not just a closed ticket.
  • You have senior judgement. You know when to keep it simple, when to push back, and how to explain a trade-off.
  • You use AI tools well and understand what they produce. We work with tools like Claude Code every day. We want someone who is comfortable with them, and who understands the code and the choices behind it well enough to see when a tool gets it wrong.
  • You want to learn the domain. No prior knowledge of ships or the maritime industry is needed. You pick up domain knowledge as you go, and you talk to our domain experts when you need to.
  • You communicate clearly in English. Norwegian is not required.

Experience that helps (non of it is a must)

  • Several years of building and running production software.
  • Ruby on Rails, ideally with Hotwire, PostgreSQL and background jobs.
  • React Native or Expo with TypeScript, especially offline-first apps and data sync.
  • Automated testing and CI/CD.
  • Building AI features into products.
  • The maritime industry, or another industry where software supports physical operations.

Our stack

Ruby on Rails 8, Hotwire (Turbo, Stimulus), ViewComponent, Tailwind CSS, PostgreSQL, Redis, Sidekiq · Expo, React Native, TypeScript, RSpec, Jest, Maestro · GitLab CI, Docker, Kubernetes , Claude Code.

Every branch goes through automated quality gates for style, security, test coverage and complexity.

What we offer

  • Software used on around 4,000 vessels, solving real problems for the people who run them.
  • Competitive salary.
  • An annual company trip somewhere in Europe. Everyone travels together, and you can bring your partner.
  • Social clubs with activities through the year.
  • Help with the work permit and a moving bonus if you relocate to Skudeneshavn (or its proximity).

Where you will work

We have offices in Skudeneshavn, Bergen and Berlin. Most of the team is in Skudeneshavn.

  • If you live within commuting distance of one of our offices, you will work from that office.
  • If you live elsewhere in Europe, remote work is possible. Working from one of our offices is still a plus.

Moving to Norway

For the right candidate, we help with relocating to Skudeneshavn, a small coastal town on the island of Karmøy on Norway's west coast. We help you apply for a skilled worker residence permit, which can be a path to permanent residency in Norway. We also offer a moving bonus that covers some of the cost of the move.

How to apply

Apply through LinkedIn. We review applications as they come in and want someone to start as soon as possible, so apply early.

In your application, tell us briefly about a time you took the initiative on something nobody asked you to do: what you noticed, what you did, and what happened.
