Job Title: Senior Structural Engineer Job Description The Senior Structural Engineer interprets design criteria, performs structural analysis, and develops complete permit and construction drawings and specifications for a variety of building and infrastructure projects. This role supports predominantly industrial and manufacturing facilities, with additional work in bridge, commercial, and specialty structures. You will coordinate closely with construction management, field personnel, suppliers, vendors, and other design disciplines, while managing multiple projects simultaneously and ensuring timely, high-quality deliverables. The position requires someone who can work both collaboratively within a team and autonomously, thriving in a fast-paced environment that demands responsiveness, resourcefulness, and the ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities. As the Senior member of the structural group, you will play a key role in guiding standards, mentoring junior staff, and helping shape the future growth of the structural team. Responsibilities Interpret design criteria and apply structural engineering principles to analyze and design building and structural systems. Design and prepare permit and construction drawings and specifications for industrial, manufacturing, commercial, and other building projects. Focus on building-side structural engineering, including industrial facilities, large field houses, commercial buildings, and specialized structures. Perform structural design involving pre-engineered metal buildings (PEMB), precast concrete, reinforced concrete, steel, wood, and masonry systems. Develop falsework and formwork designs for concrete bridge pours and other temporary structures as needed. Create detailed means-and-methods drawings for steel, rebar, and other structural materials to support construction activities. Coordinate structural drawings and models with other disciplines, including architectural, civil, and MEP teams, to ensure design alignment and constructability. Respond to field questions and requests for information, providing timely clarification and design adjustments to support construction progress. Conduct on-site visits to review existing conditions, support construction teams, and verify that work conforms to design intent. Work with vendors and subcontractors to develop unique foundation solutions and steel connection details tailored to specific project needs. Develop, manage, and implement office standards for structural documentation, including drawing templates, details, and quality control processes. Manage and mentor drafters and more junior team members, providing technical guidance and oversight of their work. Take ownership of engineering tasks and projects, working self-sufficiently to deliver complete, code-compliant designs. Collaborate with project managers and other stakeholders to plan project scopes, schedules, and deliverables. Support proposal and design efforts, contributing to concepts and construction documents for various structures and structural elements. Balance multiple concurrent projects and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Contribute to a supportive team culture by listening to colleagues, sharing expertise, and fostering a collaborative work atmosphere. Help run and grow the structural team, shaping processes and capabilities as the group expands. Optionally take on additional project management responsibilities, depending on interest and business needs. Essential Skills Professional Engineer (PE) license, with the ability to independently execute engineering designs and manage projects. At least 5 years of structural engineering experience, including work with pre-engineered metal buildings (PEMB), reinforced concrete, steel, and wood design. Experience with analysis and design of foundations, bridge falsework, and concrete structures. Proficiency in Revit for structural modeling and documentation. Proficiency with structural analysis software such as RISA-3D, RAM, STAAD, or similar tools. Strong structural design skills across industrial and building projects, including precast concrete and steel systems. Demonstrated ability to manage and direct drafters or junior staff, including reviewing and guiding their work. Ability to work autonomously without continuous oversight while maintaining high standards of quality and accountability. Capacity to manage several projects simultaneously and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Effective communication skills for coordinating with construction management, field personnel, vendors, and multidisciplinary design teams. Collaborative mindset and low-ego approach, with a personality suited to a supportive, team-oriented environment. Additional Skills & Qualifications Previous formal management or team leadership experience in a structural engineering setting. Specific industrial and manufacturing project experience, particularly with large-scale facilities and complex structural systems. Experience with bridge-related temporary works, including falsework and formwork design. Experience in wood and masonry structural design in addition to steel and concrete. Interest in developing and refining office standards, workflows, and best practices for structural documentation. Ability and willingness to mentor junior engineers and designers as the structural team grows. Comfort working in a design-build environment closely integrated with construction teams. Interest in taking on project management responsibilities in addition to production-level engineering work. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in documentation, analysis, and coordination. Work Environment The role is based in a design-build environment that primarily supports industrial and manufacturing projects, with additional bridge and commercial work. The office operates on a first-shift schedule and features an open, cubicle-style layout where structural engineers collaborate closely with architectural, civil, and MEP team members. The team is small and tight-knit, with approximately eight professionals across architecture, engineering, and related disciplines, fostering close collaboration and direct communication. A hybrid work schedule is available, with an expectation to be in the office on Tuesdays for staff meetings and flexibility for remote or in-office work on other days, ideally around two days in the office per week. The organization is also open to a fully remote arrangement, particularly for candidates located in the Midwest to maintain design continuity with regional weather and other design considerations, with occasional office visits for key meetings or major project kick-offs by mutual agreement. Structural engineers use Revit and structural analysis software such as RISA-3D, RAM, and STAAD, and work closely with construction management and field teams on means-and-methods drawings and site coordination. The culture emphasizes individual value, support, and the ability to forge your own career path, including the opportunity to help run and grow the structural team.
