The organization is a remote tax planning, preparation, and bookkeeping firm based in Milwaukee, serving over 800 clients. Their clientele primarily includes business owners such as S-corp owners, real estate investors, physicians, restaurant and hospitality owners, and realtors. The firm emphasizes proactive tax planning beyond year-end compliance, with revenues doubling annually.
About the Opportunity:
The SENIOR TAX REVIEWER role focuses on ensuring accuracy and technical quality in tax returns for business and individual clients. This position serves as the technical anchor for the preparer team by reviewing complex returns, directly communicating with clients to explain results and planning opportunities, and supporting audit correspondence. The role contributes significantly to maintaining high standards and identifying tax planning enhancements, thereby supporting the organization’s commitment to proactive tax service.
Responsibilities:
- Review Forms 1120-S, 1065, and 1040 (Schedules C and E) prepared by domestic and offshore preparers
- Prepare complex returns when needed, especially multi-entity S-corp and partnership groups
- Verify critical tax items such as shareholder and partner basis, reasonable compensation, K-1 flow-through, depreciation, cost segregation, passive activity rules, and state filings
- Lead return review calls with clients, explaining results, open items, and planning opportunities clearly
- Respond to IRS and state notices and assist with correspondence audits
- Provide clear, written review notes to preparers for improvement
- Identify and communicate planning opportunities to firm leadership
- Refine review checklists and workflow in TaxDome during and after tax season
Requirements:
- Active Enrolled Agent or CPA credential, or CPA candidate with substantial review experience
- Minimum of 4 years preparing business tax returns, including at least 2 seasons reviewing 1120-S and 1065 returns
- Strong knowledge of S-corp and partnership basis, reasonable compensation, and Schedule E rental activity
- Confident in client communication via phone and video
- Ability to work remotely and independently with availability during US Central Time business hours
- Residency in Wisconsin or Illinois
Pay Range and Compensation Package:
- Base salary: $70,000 to $80,000, based on experience and credential
- Busy-season performance bonus
- 401(k) with 100% employer match up to 4% of pay, eligible after 6 months
- Health reimbursement (QSEHRA): $400 per month toward individual health and dental premiums and out-of-pocket medical costs, tax-free, after 90 days
