About the Role:

As a Senior Underwriter Property Facultative, you will be a cornerstone of Swiss Re's facultative reinsurance business in Japan. This is a senior, high-impact, client-facing role where you will lead the assessment of complex property risks, structure sophisticated reinsurance proposals, and cultivate influential relationships with clients and brokers at the highest levels. You will bring deep technical mastery, strategic thinking, and entrepreneurial energy to a team that values innovation, collaboration, and excellence — helping to drive portfolio growth and set the standard for underwriting quality across the region

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the analysis and assessment of technical (re)insurability of complex exposures and coverage on new and renewal submissions, ensuring sound, consistent, and commercially astute underwriting decisions
  • Structure, price, and present sophisticated, tailored reinsurance proposals that meet client needs while maximising underwriting profit and deploying capacity effectively
  • Drive portfolio strategy and quality, continuously improving underwriting practices and setting benchmarks for technical excellence within the team
  • Develop and deepen specialist expertise in commercial and industrial property markets in Japan and internationally, staying ahead of emerging trends, perils, and regulatory developments
  • Proactively originate and grow a robust business pipeline by identifying new opportunities, expanding existing relationships, and driving strategic growth with an entrepreneurial mindset
  • Represent Swiss Re at a senior level in client and broker meetings, cultivating strong, trust based partnerships with key market players and industry leaders
  • Identify client needs and growth potential, developing bespoke and innovative solutions in close collaboration with clients, brokers, and internal Swiss Re colleagues across Japan and globally
  • Mentor and support junior underwriting colleagues, sharing knowledge and contributing to the development of underwriting capability within the team
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues within Swiss Re locally and internationally to deliver integrated, high-quality service and leverage the full power of Swiss Re's global network

About the Team:

The Facultative Asia Pacific team at Swiss Re is a dynamic and collaborative group dedicated to delivering innovative facultative reinsurance solutions across the Asia Pacific region. Based in Tokyo, the Japan team plays a pivotal role in managing and growing Swiss Re's property facultative portfolio, working closely with leading insurers, brokers, and industry partners. With a strong focus on technical excellence, client partnership, and market development, the team combines deep local expertise with the power of Swiss Re's global network to create meaningful value for clients and the business alike

About You:

You are a highly experienced, technically masterful, and commercially minded underwriting professional who commands respect in client-facing environments. With 5–10 years of hands-on experience in Property or Engineering underwriting, you bring a strategic perspective, entrepreneurial drive, and the ability to lead complex negotiations, build influential relationships, and deliver tailored solutions at a senior level. You are deeply embedded in the Japanese insurance and reinsurance market, and you communicate with authority, confidence, and clarity in both Japanese and English. Your current residence in Japan is essential to your ability to engage meaningfully and consistently with local clients, brokers, and stakeholders.

The base salary range for this position will be shared with you during the interview process.

We are looking for candidates who meet these requirements:

  • 5–10 years of commercial and/or industrial property or engineering underwriting experience in insurance and/or facultative reinsurance, with a strong and demonstrable track record of assessing, pricing, and managing complex risks at a senior level
  • Deep technical knowledge of manmade and natural catastrophe risks, including advanced risk mitigation measures, exposure assessment methodologies, and portfolio management.
  • Native-level proficiency in Japanese (both spoken and written) combined with current residence in Japan — this is an essential requirement for effective, nuanced communication with local clients, brokers, and stakeholders; business-level English proficiency is also required for engagement with international teams and partners

These are additional nice to haves:

  • Proven track record in senior client origination and strategic pipeline development, with demonstrated ability to identify, pursue, and convert significant new business opportunities
  • Exceptional negotiation and communication skills, with the gravitas and ability to present complex technical concepts persuasively to diverse, senior-level audiences
  • Entrepreneurial and strategic mindset, with a proactive approach to driving business growth, shaping market positioning, and developing innovative client solutions
  • Deep understanding of client needs and market dynamics, with a demonstrated ability to anticipate trends, build long-term trust-based relationships, and act as a trusted senior advisor to key market participants
  • Experience leading or mentoring within a team environment, with a collaborative approach and commitment to developing others
  • Experience working in a multicultural, international team environment, with an appreciation for diverse perspectives and working styles

Our company has a hybrid work model where the expectation is that you will be in the office at least three days per week
