At Crutchfield, our innovative company culture is centered around helping our employees succeed while delivering best-in-class service to our customers. We’re looking for a Senior UX Designer (Design & Front-End Development) to join our team based in our Charlottesville location. If you haven’t heard of us, we’re a unique blend of things: an acclaimed, national online retailer, a family-owned business that’s Virginia-based, and a community-oriented group of consumer electronics enthusiasts. In short, we sell fun stuff and love doing it! For the 4th year in a row, we’ve been named as one of the Best Places to Work by Virginia Business Magazine and Best Companies Group.

Position Overview:

Crutchfield is seeking a Senior UX Designer (Design & Front-End Development) to create intuitive, accessible, and effective digital experiences. Our UX team designs and maintains customer and employee experiences across Crutchfield’s digital ecosystem, including eCommerce websites and internal applications. Successful candidates can balance customer needs, business objectives, technical constraints, and accessibility considerations while helping teams move from ideas to shipped experiences.

This hybrid role blends UX design, front-end implementation, and cross-functional collaboration throughout the software development lifecycle.

The ideal candidate is passionate about solving customer problems, collaborating across disciplines, and bringing designs to life through code.

As a Senior UX Designer you will:

  • Partner with business stakeholders, Portfolio Owners, Full-Stack Developers, UX Researchers, UX Strategists, product experts, and domain experts to understand customer needs, business goals, and technical constraints.
  • Create user flows, information architecture, customer journeys, wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity designs using Figma.
  • Analyze insights from user research, usability testing, analytics, and stakeholder feedback to inform design decisions.
  • Support UX Research partners with usability test planning, discussion guides, observation sessions, and synthesis of findings.
  • Translate design concepts into front-end code using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and related technologies.
  • Contribute production-ready front-end code and collaborate with developers to maintain implementation quality.
  • Help evolve design systems, reusable patterns, UX standards, and front-end implementation guidelines.
  • Support and maintain responsive digital experiences across desktop, tablet, and mobile platforms.
  • Advocate for accessibility and inclusive design throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • Facilitate collaborative design discussions, workshops, reviews, and stakeholder alignment sessions.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies including planning, refinement, retrospectives, and design reviews.
  • Create clear documentation and communicate design decisions to technical and non-technical audiences.

Technologies You'll Work With:

  • Figma
  • Miro
  • HTML
  • CSS / SASS
  • JavaScript
  • Vue
  • TypeScript (preferred)
  • Azure DevOps

Our digital ecosystem includes both modern and legacy applications. UX Designers regularly contribute front-end code and collaborate closely with developers, but prior experience with C#, ASP.NET, or other backend technologies is not required.

Qualifications:

  • 4+ years of professional UX design experience within a software development organization.
  • Proficiency with Figma and modern UX design practices.
  • Experience creating user flows, wireframes, interactive prototypes, and high-fidelity designs.
  • Experience designing and validating responsive experiences across desktop, tablet, and mobile platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to maintain and enhance production web experiences.
  • Familiarity with CSS preprocessors such as SASS.
  • Familiarity working within modern front-end frameworks such as Vue and component-based design systems.
  • Experience working directly with software development teams throughout the design, implementation, and release lifecycle.
  • Familiarity with Agile software development methodologies.
  • Familiarity with digital accessibility principles and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience contributing front-end code within a production software environment.
  • Experience evaluating, designing, reviewing, or testing accessible digital experiences.
  • Familiarity with TypeScript.
  • Experience contributing to design systems or reusable component libraries.
  • Experience using Miro or similar collaboration tools.
  • Experience designing eCommerce, retail, or other complex transactional experiences.
  • Experience participating in usability testing activities and applying research findings to design decisions.

This position follows a hybrid work model, with 3 days onsite each week and the remaining days remote. Candidates should be able to commute to our office regularly and collaborate in person with team members. All remote work must be done within the Commonwealth of Virginia. We are unable to offer sponsorship or relocation assistance for this position.

Salary and Benefits:

The starting salary range for this role is $85,000 - $105,000 depending on skills and experience. This full-time position comes with a comprehensive benefit package including two health insurance plans to choose from along with dental and vision insurance plan options. We also offer a competitive wellness program, tuition reimbursement, 401K retirement plan, relaxed dress code, and discounts on the fun stuff we sell.
