Senior UI/UX Designer

(CONTRACT/FREELANCE)

• Near-site engagement in Belgium (Brussels/Geel)
• 1 day per week onsite attendance required
• Additional onsite presence may be requested when required
• Working within a multicultural and international European Commission environment

Experience

• Minimum 10 years' professional IT experience
• University degree equivalent to EQF Level 7 (Master's level or 5 years of higher education)
• Strong background in UI/UX design across the full digital solution lifecycle
• Experience working within Agile product or project delivery teams

Remit

• Translate business and user requirements into intuitive, user-centred digital experiences
• Analyse user journeys and identify usability improvements
• Produce low and high-fidelity wireframes, mock-ups and interactive prototypes
• Conduct discovery workshops and support requirements gathering activities
• Collaborate with business stakeholders, developers and project teams throughout the design lifecycle
• Create and maintain reusable design systems, component libraries and UI standards
• Develop UX/UI guidelines and best practices
• Produce visual assets including illustrations, infographics and data visualisations
• Plan, execute and analyse usability testing activities
• Ensure accessibility, usability and responsive design standards are met
• Support design handover and implementation activities with development teams
• Promote consistency of user experience across multiple digital products and services

Skills

• Expert knowledge of UI/UX methodologies and best practices
• Strong experience with:

• Balsamiq
• InVision
• UxPin
• Framer
• Similar wireframing and prototyping tools
• User-centred design and design thinking methodologies
• Responsive web design
• Web ergonomics and usability principles
• Accessibility standards and inclusive design
• User research and persona development
• User testing methodologies including:
• Usability testing
• A/B testing
• Remote testing
• Heuristic reviews
• Post-release testing
• Visual design, typography and interaction design principles
• Understanding of data protection and security considerations within digital design

Experience

• Previous experience within European Institutions, EU Agencies or public sector organisations
• Experience supporting grant management or similar business processes
• Exposure to enterprise-scale digital transformation programmes
• Experience establishing and governing design systems across multiple products

Preferred certifications

• UXQB Certified Professional for Usability and User Experience (CPUX-F)
• Nielsen Norman Group UX Certification
• Google UX Design Certificate
• Equivalent UX/UI certifications considered advantageous

Languages

• English or French at CEFR B2 level or above
• Strong written and verbal communication skills

• Strong portfolio demonstrating enterprise-scale digital products
• Expert-level Figma proficiency
• Proven experience building and managing design systems
• Strong accessibility and usability testing background
• Comfortable engaging with both business and technical stakeholders
• Experience delivering within complex corporate or government environments
