Software Engineer – Modern C++ | Robotics | Hardware Integration | Utrecht [€72K]
[MedTech / Robotics]
Some medical devices assist a clinician. This one replaces the hand entirely. It sees, it decides, it acts, and the C++ running underneath gets one shot at being correct on a live patient.
My client is a MedTech scale-up in Utrecht, over 90 people, building an autonomous device for diagnostic blood collection. Near-infrared imaging, ultrasound and Doppler ultrasound feed a robotics and AI stack that locates the vein and completes the draw end to end. The system is distributed across subsystems that talk over DDS, runs on Linux under real-time constraints, and is coordinated by state machine logic that grows every time the hardware changes. First devices are placed with customers, which is exactly the point where architecture, testability and debugging discipline start to matter more than new features.
What you’ll do
Your focus is the software layer that holds the hardware together, close to the motion control that decides how accurately the needle goes in. You design and implement components in modern C++ (C++17/20), extend and restructure state-machine-based logic, integrate evolving hardware into the stack, and work with DDS and distributed system interfaces. Hardware talks over protocols such as EtherCAT and CANopen, and you build the abstractions the other teams work with on top of that. You spend real time debugging problems that cross the software and hardware boundary, and improving how the system is verified, with automated tests and Python scripting. Knowing where hard real-time ends and soft real-time begins matters here, and so does contributing to system-level design decisions with hardware engineers, systems engineers and the other software developers in the team.
Your profile
- 4 to 7 years of professional C++ development experience
- Strong modern C++ (C++17/20) on production-level systems
- Linux experience, automated testing, and strong debugging in complex systems
- Experience with state machines and hardware-software integration
- DDS or a comparable pub/sub framework, and real-time or near real-time systems, are a plus
- Python scripting, and exposure to robotics or industrial protocols such as EtherCAT or CANopen, is welcome
- Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or a related technical field
What’s in it for you
Up to €72K gross per year including pension. Hybrid working from the Utrecht office, 25 holiday days 1 year contract.
